Spice Level: 1/2
As the head of his family, Robert Beckford, the Earl of Masten, was accustomed to dealing with various problems his siblings had caused of one sort or another. However he wasn’t prepared when his cad of brother ruined and then abandoned a young lady. To right the wrong, Robert married the girl himself; but his chivalry only went so far. He didn’t want a wife, and most certainly not a scandalous one. So after repeating his vows, he sent her packing, off to a secluded estate and expected her to stay put.
After years of mistreatment at the hands of her family, Lydia was prepared to be an accommodating wife; but her rigid and unforgiving husband asked too much of her. After languishing for years in her opulent prison, Lydia leaves her country estate for the glamour and excitement of London—and unfortunately her husband’s path.
This one will take you through many emotions and for good reasons. I loved it from the start when they ran into each other and knew there was going to be a battle between them. There are some expected twists and some unexpected twists that are shocking but matter to the story a lot. I loved Petey and Penny and their whole story. The ending was perfect especially the way they fought the rumors.
Lydia is someone that I loved from the start. She had been through so much and was a fighter that kept going. Her childhood was definitely horrible and she spent years in the country alone being the quiet shy wife until she couldn’t take it anymore. She had no plans to fall in love with Robert especially with how he treated her at first.
Robert is not someone you will love from the start because of how he is, but once he comes around you will love him. He always took care of his brother and wanted to protect his family name so he married the girl that his brother was caught with. He had no plans to fall in love with Lydia but did when he saw her all grown up and realized he had been horrible.
There are many characters to love and a couple to hate in this book. His brother is one that will surprise you in the end.
