After killing his opponent in a duel, Lionel Maitland, Marquess of Axbridge, is known as the Duke of Danger. Tortured by guilt, he shields himself with a devil-may-care attitude. However, when he kills another man in another duel, he’s beyond redemption, even though it wasn’t his fault. He refuses to smear a dead man’s name, especially when he’s left behind a blameless widow who doesn’t deserve an even bigger scandal.
Widowed and destitute, Lady Emmaline Townsend must marry the man of her parents’ choosing or beg unsympathetic relatives for support. The only way out is to ask for help from the one man she’s sworn to hate, the man who owes her anything she asks, the man who killed her husband. They strike a devil’s bargain in which passion simmers just beneath the surface. But her dead husband’s transgressions come back to haunt them and threaten their chance at love.

My Review

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Another book hangover by Darcy! Every time I pick a favorite in this series she tops it. I was hooked from the start with the duel and the mystery surrounding the reason for it. I couldn’t believe her parents put her in the position they did and forced her hand. The sexual tension between them flies off the pages and when it explodes the whole house knows. I loved them together and how everyone was trying to help them. The ending was perfect and made me want more.

Emmaline has many feelings about her husband’s death and hatred is one of them. She had married for love but was not happy. I loved her from the start because she laid blame where it needed to be and did what she had to so she could have a chance at being happy. She was a quick thinker and when she opened her heart again it was great.

Lionel is a tortured soul and really the Duke of Honor too. Everything he did was because of honor and for other people. I loved him right away and he melted my heart with the kitten. He didn’t hide his feelings and his desire to have a life like his parents. I was on edge hoping nothing would happen to him.

Excerpt

At last, he heard footsteps. The latch clicked, and the door opened. Lady Townsend quickly stepped inside, closing the door firmly behind her.

She took in the small space and positioned herself as far away from him as possible. That still only allowed maybe four feet between them. “This is rather close.”

He straightened to his full height, pushing off the shelves behind his back. “It’s also out of the way.”

She elevated her chin. “I suppose it is.”

Forgive me, but I’ve been trying to reason why you’d want to marry me, and I’m afraid I’ve come up with absolutely nothing.”

I admit it’s a severe plan, but I’m at my wit’s end. I’m destined for a marriage I don’t want, and it’s all your fault. You did say you would do anything to help me. Didn’t you mean that?”

Of course I did. I’m a man of honor, for better or for worse.” Often for worse, it seemed.

She looked away from him, her jaw tightening. When her gaze found his once more, her eyes were fire and ice, a mixture of hot anger and frigid determination. “Your honor has definitely been worse for me. Which is why I am seeking your help—you owe me.”

I do.”

Yes, and I’d planned to demand money to settle Geoffrey’s debts. After I gave you the cut direct. Which I didn’t get to do.” She folded her arms across her chest, and he felt her frustration fill the small space. “Things are not going the way I’d planned.”

I’m sorry things aren’t progressing as you wanted.” His chest squeezed, and he fought to take a breath. “Your life isn’t at all what you’d expected it would be, and that’s entirely my fault,” he said quietly. “I will give you the money you need and anything else you require.”

Anything. Yes, you said that last summer too.” Her gaze locked on to his. “My parents have decided I should marry someone I don’t want to. They have already set things in motion. I need you to marry me instead.”

Forgive me, Lady Townsend, but I find it difficult to comprehend there is anyone you’d rather marry less than me.”

She laughed, a dark, hollow sound that made his guts twist. “Yes, I can see why you’d think that, and if we were to have a true marriage, it would likely be accurate. However, to save me from marrying Sir Duncan, we will wed, and it will be a marriage of utter convenience—for me. I shall be independent to do as I please, you will provide me with ample pin money, and there will be absolutely no intimacy.”

You want me to accept an agreement of marriage in which I have no children, not even an heir?”

Her icy gaze didn’t waver. “Yes.”

Bloodiest of hells. How could he possibly agree to that? He had a responsibility to his title, his family. Yes, there was someone—his second cousin’s son—who could inherit, but that wasn’t the point. His father, if he were still alive, would be devastated to think that Lionel would trade away their legacy in such a fashion.

And yet…he owed her. He’d promised her. And if he was nothing else, he was, above all, a man of honor.

Christina McKnight’s Bound By the Christmastide Moon

Silas Anson has spent his life dealing with other people’s mistakes. Now, as the Earl of Lichfield, he has a plan that will protect his siblings, and give him a chance at a normal life. His arranged marriage to Mallory Hughes should be perfect—except for one thing: she sees visions of the future. When a man determined to free himself from the shackles of the past marries a woman with precognition, happiness in the present may be just a kiss under the Christmastide moon away.

Ava Stone’s Once Upon a Midnight Clear

Only a duke will do for Lady Ivy Dallimore. If her unhappily married sisters have taught her anything, it’s that love is fleeting but a title lasts forever, which is all well and good in theory until she finds herself falling for the scandalous third son of a marquess who is bound and determined to make his fortune in trade! Lord Michael Beck courts scandal, living life to the fullest and dabbling in games of chance. Unfortunately, he’s neither heir nor spare to his father’s title, and the time has come to enter a profession. Michael is no soldier, and he certainly isn’t cut out for the cloth, so he embarks on the most scandalous and risky venture of his life. He will need capital, however, and collecting a number of outstanding gambling debts at a Christmas Eve wedding at Castle Keyvnor seems like the perfect place to start, at least until he stumbles across the lady of his dreams. But what are the odds the practiced gambler can win the girl without losing everything he’s worked for?

Michelle Willingham’s The Sweetest Christmas

Lady Marjorie despises the idea of marriage. After being engaged to a man who tried to command every aspect of her life, from what she wore to what she ate, she refuses to consider matrimony again. Though she isn’t at all opposed to playing matchmaker for her cousin… Sir William Crandall is startled when Lady Marjorie believes he is a shy, withdrawn knight in need of a wife. He has nothing at all in common with her bluestocking cousin, but he is fascinated by the spirited Lady Marjorie. Despite her attempts at matchmaking, he intends to avoid marriage at all costs, after being abandoned at the altar. But a stolen kiss, a feast of gingerbread, and two unexpected friends find that there is magic in the Christmas holiday and a match that neither of them expected…

Bound By the Christmastide Moon by Christina McKnight

My Rating: ❤❤❤❤❤

Spice Level: 💋

The Christmastide moon is magical. I was hooked from the start, but as soon as she had a vision I couldn’t put it down. I loved how things played out to bring them together and the twists with his family and the vision were totally unexpected. There are a couple of characters that I really hope to see again. I also wondered about his parents.

Mallory is not a shy little girl like you think at first. I loved her as soon as she followed him and showed that she wasn’t shy at all. She knew her vision would come true and was going to do something.

Silas has always taken care of his siblings and will do anything to protect them. I loved that he didn’t jump to judge and was very open to everything. I loved how he was with his brother too.

Once Upon a Midnight Clear by Ava Stone

My Rating: ❤❤❤❤❤

Spice Level: 💋💋

Ava does it again with the ghosts in the castle and causing me to jump. I was hooked from the start with how different they are from each other. I loved the back and forth between them and how everyone saw what was between them. I did not see the twist coming with the governess at all and thought it was the ghosts. The ending was perfect and I loved seeing Oscar the poodle again.

Ivy does come off as very spoiled and stuck up, but she really is afraid of her heart. I loved her once she started to let her guard down and when others said the same things about her sisters it explained her more. She is a favorite of mine.

Michael is determined to make a name for himself and get the girl he wants. I loved him right away because he didn’t want to live off of his father and that he didn’t hide his feelings about her. He knew how to charm everyone.

The Sweetest Christmas by Michelle Willingham

My Rating: ❤❤❤❤❤

Spice Level: 💋 💋💋

This one will definitely spook you! I loved it from the start because the ghosts were up to their tricks again. From their first meeting, I knew it was going to be fun since he was not shy at all. I loved that because of their pasts they had no plans to marry but were drawn together. I loved seeing my favorite ghost Benedict again! There is a new ghost in this one that is terrifying and the pirate one again that I hope to find out more about. I loved her mother when she told her husband what she thought.

Marjorie does not hold back at all when it comes to something she sets her mind on. I loved her right away because she wasn’t going to let someone control her. She wasn’t really afraid of the ghosts and I loved her at the card game.

William wanted to prove he had moved on. He learned quickly to believe in the ghosts and that he had truly loved on. I loved him right away because he did seem shy at first and then when he talked to his ex I loved it.

About TO CONQUER A SCOT:

Time-traveling isn’t what Abigail Cross had in mind for her Scottish vacation, nor was a potential marriage to the Laird Aedan Macleod. The fact that the obnoxious, yet hot, and definitely sexy Highlander sees the world very differently than she does, is beside the point.

Aedan Macleod knows what he wants in a wife, and Abigail certainly doesn’t meet his Highland standard, even though he must rein in his desire, because beautiful, opinionated Abigail would never suit as a laird’s wife.

Tempers flare yet passion is undeniable, as Abby navigates her way in seventeenth century Scotland—without toilet paper. When two rival clans threaten the maddening twenty-first century minx who’s captured Laird Aedan’s heart, the mighty Highlander is willing to sacrifice everything to keep Abigail safe.

A to Z Bookish Survey Tag

A.png

It’s Random Friday and since I’m in the middle of reading Kissed at Christmas I decided to do another book tag. This time it is the A to Z Bookish Survey Tag. I discovered this tag on Brin’s Book Blog.

Author you’ve read the most books from:

Darcy Burke. I had to check Goodreads to be sure and it was a close call between her and two other authors.

Best Sequel Ever:

This is a hard one. Let’s go with The Misfortune of Lady Lucianna (The Undaunted Debutantes, #2) by Christina McKnight

Currently Reading:

Kissed at Christmas by Christina McKnight, Ava Stone, and Michelle Willingham

Drink of Choice While Reading:

Either 7UP or Mixed Berry Water. Depends on the time of day.

E-reader or Physical Book?

Physical books! Due to space and price, I have more ebooks and I do love my Kindle.

Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Actually Dated In High School:

Bran from The Untouchables series by Darcy Burke (I loved his quirks, his rule-breaking and how dedicated he was). He pulled me away from the charming bad boy Ethan in the Sins and Scandals series by Darcy Burke.

Glad You Gave This Book A Chance:

Forever Rose by Carmen Monica Oprea. It was not my typical read because it is a time travel book, but I loved it!!!!

Hidden Gem Book:

Gray Places by Julia Byrd It gave me chills and I loved it even with the romance not being front and center.

Important Moment in your Reading Life:

Discovering the many book groups on Facebook and starting my own blog. There are people like me and we totally understand each other. I was first encouraged to start my blog by readers and authors I know then to start writing my own book by them too.

Just Finished:

I just finished an ARC of A Talent for Temptation by Sabrina Jeffries. A quick amazing read.

Kinds of Books You Won’t Read:

I’m not a fan of erotica or time travel. I will read the odd one here or there, but I don’t like to books that the story almost never leaves the bedroom or books that spend a lot of time in the present day.

Longest Book You’ve Read:

So far

Drums of Autumn (Outlander #4) by Diana Gabaldon it is 880 pages according to Goodreads.

Major book hangover because of:

There are a few of them that have left me needing a break from them. Pretty much any of Darcy Burke’s books, Ava Stone’s books, Christina McKnight’s and Erica Monroe’s books. I can’t put them down until they are finished and they usually leave me needing to process something.

Number of Bookcases You Own:

Actual bookcases are zero. I have a set cubbies that are full of books and have books piled on top of them.

One Book You Have Read Multiple Times:

A Dangerous Invitation (The Rookery Rogues #1) by Erica Monroe. It’s a favorite.

Preferred Place To Read:

In my bed or outside in the fall weather.

Quote that inspires you/gives you all the feels from a book you’ve read:

“I fell in love with her by word alone. It wouldn’t matter if she were blind, deaf, bald, or broken, I would love her with all that I am.”

Lynn Winchester – The Gentleman’s Heart

Reading Regret:

Not reading the Outlander series earlier. I had stayed away from it because of the size, that it’s time travel, and not really a romance. I didn’t start reading them until after the show aired and I realized they were different from what I thought.

Series You Started And Need To Finish(all books are out in series):

There are a few, but my top one is The Grooms series by Rose Gordon. I have only Her Sudden Groom and loved Alex like crazy.

Three of your All-Time Favorite Books:

  1. Scoundrel Ever After (Secrets & Scandals #6) by Darcy Burke

2. The Outlaw (Willow Creek #2) by Lily Graison

3.West of Forgotten by Lynda J. Cox

Unapologetic Fangirl For:

Ava Stone she writes most of the books that give me chills and spook me.

Very Excited For This Release More Than All The Others:

The next book in Darcy Burke’s League of Rogues series! I have been waiting for it like crazy.

Worst Bookish Habit:

Ruining the spines of my print books. I try so hard not to bend them back, but when you have small hands it happens. It shows my books are loved though.

X Marks The Spot: Start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book:

Never Surrender to a Scoundrel by Lily Dalton

Your latest book purchase:

The Major’s Faux Fiancée (The Dukes of War #4) by Erica Ridley

ZZZ-snatcher book (last book that kept you up WAY late):

West of Forgotten by Lynda J. Cox

That was so much fun! Let me know your thoughts below.

Widow Meriel Vyse is stunned speechless when someone tries to abduct her on her way to a ball. Fortunately, Quinn Raines, her secret beau, shows up to foil the attack. Unfortunately, as the two of them are struggling with her abductor, Meriel accidentally stabs Quinn with a knife.

Unbeknownst to Meriel, Quinn set up the fake abduction so he could play the hero and win her hand in marriage. But now that his plan has gone disastrously awry, can he convince her that he’s still the man for her?

My Review

*I received a copy from the author via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

I normally don’t like this quick of a read, but I loved this! When she stabbed him I knew it was going to be a good read. It’s very fast-paced but has enough about both of them so you understand them and will make you laugh at times. I loved the ending.

Meriel believes she isn’t good enough for him because of her past. I loved that she spoke her mind and when she made up her mind she followed it. I loved her in the end and what she did.

Quinn is worried about why she won’t marry him. I loved how he thought his plan would work until he saw the knife. His past was also one that he worried about. I loved when she told him everything.

She is more than willing to never call attention to herself. But when a handsome stranger arrives to meet with her father, Ophelia can’t help but do a little investigating for her own benefit. At last, Ophelia has stumbled upon an adventure of her own—but does she possess the skills necessary to solve the mystery without the assistance of her friends?

My Review

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review

Scandal, threats, and pirates will keep you on your toes in this one. I loved how it started because it was different and hooked me into the mystery of what was happening. It’s clear that they have always loved each other, but there were reasons they were kept apart for so long. I wasn’t for sure what was going to happen when they found her brother and liked the little twist there with the girl. I did really love the ending and the scene with Tommy.

Ivy will do anything to save her brother but jumps before thinking at times. I didn’t really start to like her until over halfway through when she stopped running and started thinking about things first. I did like that she didn’t shrink away in battle.

Marcus has loved her for so long and will do anything to keep her safe. I loved him from the start because he kept his word and didn’t beat around the bush when it comes to anything. I loved what he did in the end with Tommy.

The Secret Life of a Book Blogger Tag

stencil.blog-post-feature (13).jpg

It’s Random Friday and it’s time for another tag! And since it’s my birthday I thought this tag sounded like a lot of fun. I found the tag on Spines & Covers. I wasn’t tagged and won’t tag anyone so if you like this tag consider yourself tagged.

How long have you been a blogger?

Almost two years. I started in December 2015 and originally it was going to be a personal blog, but it quickly turned into a book blog after a few posts. Time really flies when you are doing something you love. My blog has grown and changed in that short time too.

At what point do you think you’ll stop blogging?

I don’t think I ever will. I will probably take breaks, but never fully stop. This blog has opened so many doors for me and I’ve met some great people through blogging. It will always be my baby (my others are too) since it is the first blog that I really put the time into it.

What is the best thing about blogging?

In two word THE PEOPLE! I have met so many people and gotten to know them through this blog. We talk, help each other, and love seeing each other’s opinions on all things books and book related. Even if we don’t always agree we still have fun.

What is the worst thing? What do you do to make it ok?

The drama that comes from one bad apple in the bunch. All it takes is one book blogger to do something to upset someone and it can set off a domino effect for the rest of us. I usually stay away from it, but there are times that I need to defend us bloggers.

How long does it take to make/find pictures to use?

Depending on the post it doesn’t usually take long. If it’s something I have on hand I ask my brother (the photographer) to take pictures for me and then just do quick edits ( sometimes me and sometimes him). When it comes to my graphics it can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour depending on the look I’m going for.

What do you wear when you write blog posts?

95% of the time it’s my PJs. I like comfy clothes when typing, but sometimes I have other things to do so I put on normal clothes.

How long does it take to prepare?

I have a schedule for this blog that I don’t always stick to. Mondays are either writing updates or what I’m reading that week, Wednesdays are always book reviews, and Fridays are random days. I sometimes plan out Friday posts if I don’t have another book review for that day or there is something on my mind I want to share. Other times I find random tags that catch my attention like today. Sometimes I have reviews on all three days or reviews on other days of the week due to tours.

How do you feel about the book blogger community?

Every book blogger I have met is amazing! We can refer people to each other and we all understand each other and the book blogger life. There can be a bit of drama and some cliches, but usually, we all get along great.

What do you think one should do to get a successful blog?

Don’t let it become a chore. If you find yourself dreading the work change it up and keep it fun. If you are in a reading slump take a break from accepting requests and read what you want out of your personal collection and slow down.
