Willow Creek sweethearts, Jesse and Alexandra, await the birth of their baby in the only way they know how. By getting on each others nerves.

*Note: This short story is part of the WILLOW CREEK SERIES and does not stand alone. It follows directly after WILD HORSES and gives us a little glimpse at the birth of their baby.

My Review

I am so glad that Lily wrote this short story! Jesse and Alex are one of my all-time favorite couples in Willow Creek and I loved seeing this glimpse of their lives. Marriage and pregnancy definitely did not keep them from driving each other crazy. It was clear her pa would still couldn’t say no. The ending was amazing and I can’t wait for more short stories!

“In struggling with misfortune, Lies the true proof of virtue.” -Shakespeare

It is the year 1848, and a cholera outbreak has just ravaged Manchester, leaving Emma Belden an orphan, with two young siblings to care for. Left with few options, she is forced to enter the workhouse and suffer the habitual injustices commonplace to that sad institution. Her beauty and naivety a target for the unscrupulous master of the workhouse and Edward Wells, the owner of the local textile mill, Emma will be compelled to make the difficult decision between the safety of her brother and sister, and her own virtue.

Gideon, Lord de Monthaut, is instantly smitten the moment he sees Emma, despite the fact that she is on the arm of one of the most notorious blackguards in Manchester society.

Will Emma find it possible to rise above her circumstances and find love? And in the process learn the true Proof of Virtue?

My Review

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review

This is not your typical romance as it shows the dark side of the time, but the raw emotion is so worth it! I liked the amount of time it took for them to meet because I really got to know Emma beforehand.  It’s one of those stories that have your emotions on edge and changing throughout the book. I love how they first spotted each other and the scene at the opera. I held my breath when it came to the pond scene and almost yelled out loud. Throughout the whole book, I was hoping for a certain ending with Edward and it happened so I was thrilled. This is not a full feel-good story which makes it a nice change.

Emma is so strong and a fighter. I loved her from the start because she didn’t cower from anyone and wasn’t going to be bullied around. She did what she had to to keep her brother and sister safe and taken care of. No matter what she was going to her brother and sister and start a new life.

Gideon can make you smile no matter what. I loved how he had a way of lightening the mood and how he was with every person he was around. He took action as soon as he realized what was going on with Emma and didn’t care about what she had been forced to do. He would never let her feel shame.

What I’m Reading This Week – A New Author

stencil.blog-post-feature (2)

This week I’m reading not only a new to me author but a brand new author! I’m reading Leila Snow’s Proof of Virtue. It’s not your typical romance as it’s truer to the time with no fluff and raw.

While I do love the romances out there I’m also always on the lookout for those that dare to be different by showing more of the rougher side of the times, choosing settings outside of the ballrooms and fancy locations, or having storylines that are not always popular.

I can’t wait to dive into this one and post my review Wednesday!

The Christmas Book Bloggers Tag

The Christmas Book Bloggers Tag

I found this tag on Between My Lines and it sounded like a lot of fun! It will also get us even more into the Christmas spirit. I have changed the wording around a bit to fit me.

What is your favorite Christmas scene in a book?

Tough one because I have read a lot of Christmas stories lately. I will say in A Scottish Lord for Christmas when Quinn’s gives Rowenna her gift is my favorite.

Do you have any Christmas book traditions?

I read as many Christmas themed Historical Romances as I can get my hands on leading up to Christmas.

Do you prefer to get presents of bookstore gift cards or books?

Gift cards! You may know who my favorite authors are, but not know what I already have by them. Even going on my TBR list on Goodreads to pick isn’t the best idea because there are so many and some are a higher priority than others to me.

Do you give books as presents?

Only if the person gives me a list of books they want or have been talking about certain ones a lot. It’s too risky to get the wrong book or something they have no interested in.

What bookish item is on your Christmas wishlist?

A new Kindle case! I got my Kindle earlier this year and still don’t have a proper case. I also have many bookish themed shirts on my list.

What 3 books would you love Santa to have in his sack for you?

256014773647139936983338

Fake Christmas tree or real Christmas tree?

We’ve always had a fake tree. Allergies, mess, and pets keep us fro ma real one. Plus the lights are already on it and we can set it up as early as we want.

What’s your favorite thing about Christmas?

The wrapping and food! I love to wrap gifts and anything I can get my hands on. but I also love the food.

What Christmas book would you recommend?

All the Christmas at Castle Keyvnor books. They are amazing stories.

What dish on your Christmas menu are you most looking forward to?

The sauce! We are doing spaghetti and meatballs this year and I love my mom’s sauce with fried pepperoni in it.

When do you open your Christmas presents?

On Christmas Eve. We use to get up and do it on Christmas morning. Then we started opening one on Christmas Eve. Then we just decided to open them all on Christmas Eve since we didn’t have as many gifts as we got older.

What’s your favorite Christmas song?

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow by Randy Travis.

Are you dreaming of a white Christmas?

I always do, but it rarely happens.

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review

The suspense of will they fall in love will drive you mad! I was hooked from the start with her red cloak and the mystery surrounding her. The instant connection and fun flirting between them throughout the story was perfect and a favorite part of the whole story. I was on the edge of my seat about her past and wondering what was going to happen. There is so much going on in this story that I couldn’t put it down. I was holding my breath every time that man came around because I had no clue what he had planned. The ending was perfectly unexpected and left me wanting to know about his brother.

Genevieve wants one thing and that is to start her new life where she doesn’t have to do what someone else says. I have a love-hate relationship with her because I love her spirit, bluntness and that she is not an innocent miss. But at times I wanted to shake her because she kept running and wouldn’t listen even though I understand why.

Marcus was determined to leave his vices behind him and restore his reputation. I loved him because he was always honest and didn’t hide what he wanted. He just wasn’t always the best at voicing things right and would get himself into more of a mess. The sacrifices he was willing to make will melt your heart.

Excerpt:

Have you kissed her yet?” Samuel asked.

Marcus and Samuel rode along the pasture’s perimeter with an eye to the cottage. Miss Turner’s vibrant red cloak stood out against mellow sandstone. Shovel in hand, she jabbed the earth with determined thrusts. The weeds didn’t stand a chance.

I assume we’re speaking of my housekeeper.” Marcus halted Khan. “A hardworking, respectable woman of excellent character. She’s done a fine job with Pallinsburn. I wouldn’t besmirch her honor with talk like that nor should you.”

Samuel rode on, his shoulders bouncing with laughter. “And every night she ascends to heaven on angel’s wings.”

If his friend saw right through him, how soon before others did?

Came on strong, did I?”

Samuel pinched a small space between his thumb and forefinger. “A little.”

He urged his horse forward. “I don’t want her reputation damaged.”

Should’ve thought about that before making her your housekeeper. People will talk.”

Marcus searched Miss Turner out again, a gust boxing his ears like some admonishing aunt.

Was it so wrong to want to help a woman in need?

His housekeeper cleared the last weedy invaders off his front step. Her serious exterior belied deep-seated passion, evidenced in the way she dove into every task. The enthusiasm fascinated him.

And yes, he admired her other parts.

What will people talk about? Her youth?” he retorted. “Does a woman have to be long in the tooth to hold a decent position?”

No, but it’d help if you were toothless. Or married.” Samuel stared ahead, the wind assaulting his queue. “We don’t set the rules, but we both know them.”

You hired her, and you’re not a married man.”

Samuel’s gaze pinned him. “Nor do I have your unsavory reputation.”

I’d wager my housekeeper has more honor, more determination in her little finger than any woman of my acquaintance,” he said fiercely. “Who I am should have no bearing on her.”

Me thinks you doth protest too much…or whatever that drivel is. A clear sign you have it bad for her, but haven’t touched her. Yet.”

Why did Samuel hunt for sordid details? Likely he’d seen through Miss Turner with her low-cut bodices and saucy skirts. Didn’t matter. She worked hard. He didn’t care if she fit the proper housekeeper stamp or not.

He ought to buy a dull grey gown for her, if only to aid her reputation. Smiling against his collar, he guessed she wouldn’t wear it. Nor should she have to. One look at his red-cloaked gardener and he was certain of one thing: he’d do his anything to keep his friend, or any man, on the straight and narrow when it came to Miss Turner. She deserved a fresh start.

His housekeeper had nabbed a piece of his heart.

But the afternoon ride wasn’t meant to discuss his housekeeper’s allure. Samuel pulled his hat low, failing to look him in the eye.

Quoting Shakespeare,” Marcus said. “You must be reading with Adam again.”

Adam Rutledge, Viscount d’Arque, really rather loathes Christmas. The banal cheerfulness. The asinine party games. And, worst of all, the obligatory trip to the countryside. His grandmother, however, loves the holiday—and Adam loves his grandmother, so he’ll brave the fiercest snowstorm to please her. But when their carriage wheel snaps, they’re forced to seek shelter at the home of the most maddening, infuriating, and utterly beguiling woman he’s ever met.

Sarah St. John really rather loathes rakes. The self-satisfied smirks. The sly predatory gazes. Oh, and the constant witty banter rife with double meaning. But in the spirit of the season, she’ll welcome this admittedly handsome viscount into her home. But as the snowstorm rages, the Yule log crackles, and the tension rises, Sarah and Adam find themselves locked in a fiery, passionate kiss. If love is the true meaning of Christmas, it’s the one gift this mismatched pair can’t wait to unwrap.

My Review

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review

This one is perfect for a chilly night because you will need a fan otherwise. I loved the instant tension between the two of them plus the added fun from the families. I had no clue how things would happen and didn’t expect the twist from her past at all. The proposal was so different and perfect for them.

Sarah has a good reason for not trusting many men and she doesn’t hold back her dislike either. I loved that she learned to look past his walls and the show he put on or others. She learned to open up and let her heart take over.

Adam hides the real him and puts walls up to protect himself. I loved that his grandmother knew the real him and pushed him to show it and open his heart. He also had a past that explained him more.

In the final installment of USA Today bestselling author Christi Caldwell’s Sinful Brides series, a runaway heiress entrusts her fate to the man she betrayed.

Lady Eve Pruitt has never forgotten her childhood friend, the young pickpocket Calum, who she feared had been condemned to the gallows. Now, years later, Eve is the one in danger. Her brother, made desperate by gambling debts, threatens to steal her inheritance, and Eve has no choice but to run.

Under an assumed name, she takes a job as a bookkeeper at the notorious Hell and Sin Club. Nothing in this bawdy den shocks her more than discovering that her employer is none other than Calum. Keeping her identity a secret is one thing—but hiding her feelings for him is another.

As Calum becomes increasingly taken with the strangely haunting beauty, he looks forward to exposing her mysteries. But when her masquerade is revealed, it’s left to Eve to prove that her desire for him is no deception.

My Review

*I was provided a copy from the author via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

My heart was in it from the start with what happened all those years ago. Then I was holding my breath when she was running and I was hooked even more. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how she would be discovered and what would happen then. That instant feeling of knowing each other, but not realizing it at first kept the suspense going wondering when he would realize it. I held my breath when her brother showed up and did not expect at all how everything would end. I loved the journey of forgiveness of themselves and each other.

Eva was extremely strong to have made it all these years with her brother and is so close to being safe. I loved her right away because she knew what she had to do and didn’t back down when talking to her brother. She always put others first and wanted to protect everyone. She also was very understanding of why most people did what they did.

Calum always took care of his family and others and put himself last. He comes off as a person not to be messed with, but he is more understanding and kind than you realize. I loved how he was with everyone and that he asked his sister what to do. He reacts to somethings differently than you expect.
