Dukes don’t need help, or do they?

Michael Redmond, the Duke of Cortland, needs to be in London—most expeditiously—but a band of highway robbers have thwarted his plans. Purse-pinched, coachless, and mired in mud, he stumbles on Lilly Beauchamp, the woman who betrayed him years ago.

Ladies can’t be heroes, or can they?

Michael was her first love, her first lover, but he abandoned her when she needed him most. She’d trusted him, and then he failed to meet with her father as promised. A widowed stepmother now, Lilly loves her country and will do her part for the Good of England—even if that means aiding this hobbled and pathetic duke.

They lost their chance at love, or did they?

A betrothal, a scandal, and a kidnapping stand between them now. Can honor emerge from the ashes of their love?

My Review

I don’t think I’ve ever read one that intertwines the past and present like this and I loved it!! You really get to know both of them so much and it makes them seem so real. It was an adventure from the start with them and finding out who was behind the robbery. They didn’t realize it, but everything was working to bring them together again. I was holding my breath wondering how everyone would react and then the kidnapping had me on the edge of my seat. I wanted to do a happy dance when everyone came together to and supported love. I loved Hugh and can’t wait for Natalie’s story. I also loved that it handled some real history.

Lilly did what her father wanted all those years ago and now she was free from it all. She broke my heart when she talked about doing what her father had wanted. But her spirit wasn’t broken and I loved how she wouldn’t give up and her love of animals. She didn’t hold onto the past like some would.

Michael had changed in those years for many reasons, but duty doesn’t always win. I loved how even though he was a duke he saw the need for change to help others. When he saw the paper I knew a fight was coming. His story about what his father said made me tear up.

This book does contain a scene between Lilly and her husband that could be triggering to some due to the nature of it. Annabelle did a great job of handling it and I feel it was needed to understand things.

The Somerset sisters, three beautiful, headstrong debutantes in Regency London, are discovering that a bit of scandal is a delightful thing…

For the sake of propriety, and her younger sisters’ reputations, Iris Somerset has kept her rebellious streak locked away. But though she receives a proposal from Phineas Knight, Lord of Huntington, Iris can’t marry a man she knows isn’t truly enamored with her. In fact, Iris no longer wants to be chosen—she wants to choose. Under the clandestine tutelage of “wicked widow” Lady Annabel Tallant, she’ll learn how to steer her own marriage prospects—and discover her secret appetites.

What kind of debutante refuses a marquess? Finn is surprised, a little chastened—and thoroughly intrigued. This new, independent version of Iris is far more alluring than the polished socialite she used to be. Finn believed he needed a safe, quiet wife to curb his wilder impulses. But the more Iris surprises him, the more impossible it becomes to resist their deepest desires.

My Review

This was my first time reading one of Anna Bradley’s books and I’m hooked! I knew there was more to both of them and they just needed to let it all out. From that moment in the garden, I knew they both were going to need help and that there were going to be some surprises along the way. I loved Lady Tallant’s way of helping and what she always said was her reason for it. When they finally got everything out it was like an explosion through the house. The ending was perfect for many reasons.

Iris has kept her true self hidden for a long time without fully realizing it. I loved her from the moment she didn’t run right away in the garden because it showed she was tougher then she looked. She needed to learn about herself to understand more about everything around her.

Finn is an honorable man, but not anywhere near as boring and cold as he seems. I loved slowly getting to know and understand him and once that wall went down I needed a fan. There is a charm to him and the way things don’t always come out like he wants and him learning about himself.

Tour and Review: Lord of Fortune (Legendary Rogues #3) by Darcy Burke

SBPR-BT-BANNER

Lord_of_Fortune_1800x2700Lord of Fortune, an all-new historical and romantic standalone from Darcy Burke is LIVE!

Dashing adventurer Penn Bowen is dedicated to preserving Britain’s history and his carefree, bachelor lifestyle. He’s happiest when he’s in pursuit of knowledge and the occasional liaison with the right woman. So he’s more than a little perturbed when the wrong woman inserts herself into his latest quest—proving that a valuable artifact in Oxford’s museum is a fake. Amelia Gardiner is smart and capable…and determined to prove that Penn is wrong about the treasure her grandfather found.

Amelia won’t allow Penn to denigrate her family’s legacy, and she certainly won’t join the ranks of women who throw themselves at his feet. As secretive and dangerous factions infiltrate their hunt, Amelia and Penn must work together to stay one step ahead. But passion ignites between them and suddenly their alliance is more than a simple convenience. When peril strikes too close, they’ll risk everything they hold dear: family, honor, and a chance for the greatest treasure of all—love.

My Rating: ❤❤❤❤❤

This book was 1001% worth the wait! The artifacts and The Order continue to lead you on a fun adventure with unexpected twists that will surprise you.  Their first meeting is one of my favorites because I knew it was going to be fun. I loved how there was an instant spark between them. I never saw the twists with both of their lives coming and had no idea what was going to happen. I loved that there was some real history included and Gideon was great! The ending was perfect and I can’t wait for the next one.

Amelia will not hesitate to do what she has to keep her family legacy preserved and find the dagger and heart. I loved her right away because she wasn’t going to let anything stop her. She was a fast thinker that knew how to trick someone quickly.

Penn put everything into his work only to have a shocking twist thrown at him. I loved that he always was honest and encouraged women like her. He knew what he was going to do and what he wanted and just needed a plan. He is one of my top book boyfriends.

Excerpt

Penn enjoyed watching her animated expression change as she’d relayed the tale. “You’re a romantic.”

Her brow pleated for a moment. “Not particularly.”

He wasn’t sure he believed her, but he’d have to take her word for it since he barely knew her. Though he hoped they were rectifying that.

He did?

Did he hope to know her better? Certainly, if it meant gathering information he needed to find the real heart and dagger. As to that—he needed to convince her to accept his partnership, especially if the Order was involved. “The Order’s primary objective is to keep the Thirteen Treasures—and really anything to do with them—from being found or publicized. They want them to remain a legend.”

“But one of them is in a museum.”

He lifted his right shoulder. “Or not.”

She rolled her eyes and pursed her lips. “Does the Order agree with that assessment?”

“I can’t say for certain—let me be clear: I am not a member. Members are, for the most part, descendants of the knights.”

“How can that be possible if it’s all a legend?”

“The Order wants everyone to think it’s all a legend. I didn’t say they believed that.”

Mr. Tarleton returned with Penn’s breakfast.

After the innkeeper left, Mrs. Forrest shook her head. “That seems ridiculous. What is their reasoning?”

“That the treasures are too powerful, that if they were to be found, they would cause strife and conflict.” He sliced off a piece of ham and brought it to his mouth.

“War?” She stared at him a moment, and her shoulder twitched as if she suppressed a shiver. “My grandfather told me once that he gave the heart to the museum because it was far too valuable to keep. He feared someone would steal it.”

Penn relaxed slightly. Her sharing such a thing with him was progress.

Her brow furrowed once more and stayed that way as she spoke. “What he said in the letter… Was he afraid of this Order? Do I need to be concerned?”

It was the perfect opportunity to bind her to him, to encourage her reliance, but he’d also said he wouldn’t lie. “You do not need to be afraid. Concern, or wariness, is always a good thing. Even if you decide to associate with me.”

She gave him a dark but curious stare. “And what do I need to be wary about with you?”

He didn’t think she meant any sort of innuendo, but his brain took that route automatically. Lout. “I don’t plan to steal anything from you. I merely want to share information so that we may get to the heart—pardon the pun—of the matter.”

She rolled her eyes again, but this time, the edge of her mouth ticked up with humor. He suppressed a smile before taking another bite of ham.

After he swallowed, he said, “I only meant that being guarded will serve you well. That said, you can trust me.”

She let out a short laugh. “One of the first things you said to me was that you didn’t trust me, and now you expect me to trust you?”

He had said that, blast. And he’d meant it. Did he trust her now? Not completely. But then the list of those he trusted completely was quite succinct—his parents and his sister. “How about we give it a try?”

There was something about her… Something he wanted to discover. She, like all women, was a mystery. The difference was that he wanted to investigate this one.

Scandal proves deadly in this dark, emotional Gothic Regency Romance

Lady Jemma Forster knows all too well how ruthless gossip-mongers can be. She sacrificed her own happiness to restore her family’s reputation. Her marriage of convenience to an affluent earl meant saying goodbye to passion, and any chance at love with the dashing lawman who set her soul aflame. She leads a sedate, practical life as the Countess of Wolverston. Until her husband is murdered, and the only man who can bring his killers to justice is her former love.

Bow Street Runner Gabriel Sinclair has spent the last three years trying to forget about smart, beautiful Lady Jemma, who broke his heart when she married his best friend. The Earl of Wolverston’s death thrusts Gabriel and Jemma back together, as they work to find his murderer. Their investigation takes them into the darkest, most dangerous parts of London, with threats coming from all sides. They’re perfect partners for solving crimes, but can they be partners in love too?

Previously released in It Started With a Whisper

My Review

As with all of Erica’s books, I’m hooked right away and there’s always a twist to surprise me. I loved the whole story surrounding their past and her husband sounded like a good guy. I was shocked by who the killer was, the reason for it and what he did afterwards. The note she found was definitely a scary surprise, but also sweet in a way. I loved seeing Claire and Felicity again and how they were involved with things. The scene with her and the woman that had information was a favorite along with the scene about the grave.

Jemma knew who to call for help with not just the murder, but her heart too. I loved her and how she couldn’t really lie and didn’t really care what others thought. She did really care about her husband and had a special relationship with him. I didn’t expect her to be a good fighter to when in trouble.

Gabriel has always loved her and it was no secret to most people. I loved that he understood her and her reasons for marrying her husband. He is one of those people that you want to be friends with no matter what.

I also love Lady X’s little scandals she wrote because it added to it.

Esmie Elstone is thrown into panic when she hears of Captain Rockford’s return. But she is determined that the days of him interfering with her life are over. Destroying her chances of a happy future on his last visit, had resulted in her being foisted on her Aunt for a third pointless season in London.

To alleviate the boredom of society life, Esmie helps run a discreet betting enterprise under the guise of a sewing club. But there are some things you just shouldn’t wager on, and Esmie’s integrity is soon put to a dangerous test.

Richard Rockford had known Esmie almost all her life. As neighbours, her father, Admiral Elstone, had depended on Richard to keep an eye on his daughter when he was away at sea – a responsibility he had always taken on willingly. But her cruel and thoughtless actions, from the day he had left four years earlier, had shaken him. Now, he was back, and he wanted answers.

But when Esmie tumbles into a treacherous conspiracy, can he really turn his back on her?

My Review

This was my first book by Susan Lodge and I couldn’t put it down and was hooked from page one! Were they going to kill each other or kiss? I never knew what was going to happen between them. I knew her past was going to come back and cause more trouble but didn’t expect the amount of trouble. It was clear to everyone that they were perfect for each other because they balanced each other out. I was holding my breath when she was being questioned and then when it came to what they planned. The proposal and ending were perfect and I didn’t see the twist with her friend coming.

Esmie was definitely on the wild side even when she didn’t mean to be. She lived with such guilt for so long that it was heartbreaking. I loved her right away because she didn’t mean to always cause trouble and she knew how to take care of herself. Once her eyes were fully open to everything she was free.

Richard was always looking out for her no matter what and he didn’t realize fully why. I loved him because he really cared even though he wanted to make her suffer at first. Nothing would stop him from keeping her safe and I wouldn’t dare try to stop him.

“Sisters-in-law to marquises and wards of earls do not marry uneducated bastards with empty coffers.”

In this fourth installment of USA Today bestselling author Collette Cameron’s Conundrums of the Misses Culpepper series, a roguish sea captain battles his attraction to a gently-bred hellion.

Captain Oliver Whitehouse has two goals:

1. Make the final payment on his ship
2. Exact revenge for his grandfather’s murder

He certainly shouldn’t interrupt years of planning to rescue a damsel in distress and see her safely to England. Nor should he foolishly entertain romantic notions about a future with the impulsive beauty. Even if she is the loveliest creature he’s ever laid eyes on, and only she makes him forget his past.

Blaike Culpepper once craved adventure and excitement. Until her impetuousness nearly caused her ruin. Now shadowed by scandal, and pursued by a madman, she finds herself obligated to the darkly handsome Oliver Whitehouse. Though she saves the swashbuckling scoundrel’s life and enjoys a forbidden kiss, the infuriating man spurns her.

Dare Oliver risk everything to pursue Blaike, despite the vast difference in their social stations, or should he sail away? Leaving his heart behind?

Caution: This novel contains a dark-tempered, devilishly handsome sea captain, and impulsive, sometimes mischievous heroine, multiple villains you’ll love to loathe, and a foul-mouthed cockatoo sure to make you giggle. Or blush.

For an adventurous page-turning Regency Historical Romance novel brimming with suspense, passion, and tenderness, read the fourth installment of the Conundrums of the Misses Culpepper.

My Review

You will be hooked from the start with this one! I was holding my breath as soon as I realized what was happening in the office. I loved how they were together from the start because they couldn’t hide anything from each other. M’Lady Lottie adds to everything with how she interrupts and the things she says. I did not expect the reason for why his grandfather was murdered or everything surrounding it.

Blaike is one of a kind in many ways. I loved her right away because she wouldn’t go down without a fight for anything. She knew what she wanted and went after it. When she did what she did in front of everyone I couldn’t keep from laughing.

Oliver believes they can never be but is very wrong. I loved him from that start because of how open he was with her and the way he treated everyone including Lottie. He had no clue what secrets were buried about his family.

I loved that it also involved some Italian.

Be careful what you wish for…

When Lord Hawkridge inherits a penniless marquessate, he must abandon his courtship of the lowborn girl he loves. Years later, she rises from commoner to textiles heiress. Hawk has never banished her from his heart. Here’s their chance to share his home! But how can he convince a woman whose trust he destroyed that he desires her far more than her money?

Faith Digby’s chaotic world is too full to bother with men. She controls half a boarding school, one life-endangering secret, and two recently gentrified parents. There’s no time for the old flame roaring back into her life. Not when admitting she still loves him would imperil everything and everyone she holds dear…

My Review

This one has it all! A secret love, heartbreak, and more secrets. I couldn’t put it down because there was something at every turn to pull me in more. Their past story is heartbreaking and he wanted to make things right so much. I loved how no matter how hard she tried her heart reacted to him and wanted to believe him. I did not see her secret coming at all and held my breath when he found out. What he decided was not what I thought was going to happen, but I loved it.

Faith made it clear she never wanted to see him again, but fate brought him back. I loved her and the work she did at the school. She can break your heart when talking about the past. I loved when she realized he needed to forgive himself.

Hawk’s whole life has been a mess and he’s vowed to never be like his father or guardian. My heart melted at how much he was trying to restore things and how much he hated what he had done. He reacted but thought things through when it came to her secret.

I loved her parents throughout the story and his brother and mother.
