My Review

*I received a copy via NetGalley.

Another up until 2 AM read! This one is steamy and will give you chills for many reasons. I love a story with smugglers, secrets, and a bit of mystery. You will be hooked from the start like I was because you know right away how they will be with each other. I had my suspicions from the start about who was involved in the smuggling and was partially right. Some favorites include her a shooting and the twists surrounding everything. The ending was perfect.

Lizzie is definitely opinionated, educated and voices her thoughts to anyone. She comes off as a wild child many times, but also is very stubborn and doesn’t always think thing through. I did love her for fighting things she believed in and her struggle to be true to herself.

Jamie (Jameson) convinced himself that everything was apart of his plan and nothing else, but from the start, you know the truth. I loved him right away because he had a hint of mystery to him and also spoke his mind. He is on a mission that isn’t quite going to plan in many ways.

I highly recommend this one.

Originally written under the pseudonym Deborah Martin, this unforgettable tale of mystery, treasure, and passion is back in print at last and newly revised for today’s audience!

Welsh widow Catrin Price is haunted by a family death curse. Any man whom she marries without first drinking from an ancient Druid chalice sold by her ancestor long ago is unquestionably doomed. But when she hunts it down to purchase it, the chalice’s former owner ends up dead. Who will believe her innocent with the man’s treasure in her hands? Now she lives in fear of discovery, afraid to trust, afraid to give away her heart…

Even Newcome, a scholar struggling to overcome a difficult past, travels to Wales to find the mysterious woman last seen with his murdered friend. So when the lady proves to be a beautiful yet shy creature who shares his love of Welsh mythology, he’s torn between believing her guilty and trusting the passion blazing between them. But as unscrupulous men seek the chalice for their own devious purposes, will Catrin and Evan let their wall of mistrust stand between them? Or will they defeat their enemies together and embrace the love intended for them since time immemorial?

My Review

*I received a copy from the author via NetGalley

This story will make you want to read up on Wales and Welsh mythology. The opening was perfect and hooked me from the start with the tale of the chalice. I loved the mystery and had absolutely no clue who the murderer was or why and was taken by surprise when it was revealed. Catrin and Evan are perfect for each other and definitely have instant chemistry. I loved their first meeting and how they are kind of opposites in many things. The ending was AMAZING! So much happened that made non-believers into believers.

Catrin is so shy but so strong too. She has had so much happen to her that it’s easy to understand why she believes in the curse and doesn’t trust strangers. I loved her personality and her name. When she needs to take action and protect someone she loves she is powerful. I loved her with the gun.

Evan is not shy at all and is very smart. His past is heartbreaking and has convinced him to never marry, but he is not his past. I loved how he didn’t hide what he felt and the way he went about getting her to listen. He did have a bit of an inner battle and didn’t see what others saw in him which affected him in many ways.

I wanted to dislike Catrin’s father in law, but he proved himself to be a good man in the end. I was so excited to see Juliana and Rhys and how they played into the story.

HE’S MADE A DANGEROUS WAGER

Ambrose Worthing is no gentleman. He’s a proud cold-hearted rake who’s determined to stay a bachelor forever. He enjoys bedding a different woman every night without the risk of falling in love. When he hears about a wager over the seduction and ruination of the daughter of his father’s best friend, he knows he must intervene. Committing himself to the bet, he agrees to seduce Lady Alexandra Rockford—for her own good. He never expected the lady in question to be a beautiful, fiery creature who has passions of her own that call to his guarded heart.

SHE’S VOWED NEVER TO FALL IN LOVE AGAIN

Alexandra Rockford has sworn off men, her heart still broken from the false promises of a childhood sweetheart who left her to marry an heiress. When she stumbles into Ambrose outside of a country ball, she knows the rake his trouble. His smile, his touch, his forbidden kiss are all too tempting but being with him would ruin her. Determined to enjoy herself without falling in love, Alex can’t help but let her defenses down with the too charming rake. But when she discovers Ambrose is seducing her to win a bet, it will take everything Ambrose has to prove to her that he is worthy to love her.

Absolutely amazing!! I highlighted so many favorite parts and lines from start to end. The moment they met I knew they were a perfect match even with the pranks that followed. I loved that when I thought everything was going great a twist was thrown in about the wager that I did not see coming. All of the characters are a bit surprising as you get to know them and a couple of more twists are in there. The ending was perfect with the whole book having that bit of fairy tale feeling.

Alex may be my favorite heroine of all time. She is not shy, very bold, and knows how to stop a man in his tracks when he tries something. I loved how she got along with her father and how open she was about things.

Ambrose was exactly like I thought he would be after meeting him the last book. He definitely is a rake, but there is a side of him that wants to protect people. I loved how he treated people and when set out to make things better.

Vaughn was one I wanted hate when he showed up, but as it went on he sounded like a pretty good guy really. The parts in the end with Lady Society really have excited and I want to know who she is.

Excerpt

Ambrose Worthing was attending a country dance.

The notion was laughable. He, a glorified rakehell with a distaste for country life, was currently entrapped in a bloody assembly room that could pass for a barn on better days. In fact, as he glanced around the room, he decided it most certainly resembled a farmyard at the moment, with the gaggle of society mamas squawking like geese, their turbans festooned with tall ostrich plumes.

He groaned when he saw them scrutinizing him, whispering behind their fans, their eyes dancing over his form as they assessed his marital suitability. From the clever smiles he glimpsed, he knew they were ready to throw their innocent daughters at his feet.

Like bloody hell. He was not about to find himself accidentally “compromising” any of the young ladies here tonight. He’d come here tonight to find one particular young woman to seduce her, to win a bet he’d made in London the previous week, and hopefully save her. He was not about to let the gathering of society mamas intimidate him into dancing with their daughters, even if they rivaled the great ancient Mongolian Golden Horde led by Genghis Khan. Many a rake had fallen under their wiles, surfacing months later to find themselves stuck with a shy chit of a girl as a wife and an obnoxious mother-in-law.

At twenty-nine years old, he’d managed to weather many attempts by his friends and relatives to see him settled. If those who loved him could not bring him to the altar, no silly chits from the country would have any success either. He was a permanent bachelor, and he liked it. Marriage was not made for men like him. To be tied down with one woman for the rest of his life and suffer the trappings of home and hearth when he could be exploring the world and living? Heavens no, he would not give up his freedom for anything.

A few daring matchmaking mamas separated from the crowd and walked in his direction. Damnation, even the need for a master of ceremonies to perform introductions wouldn’t stop these women.

Ambrose spun on his heel, desperate to avoid conversation. If he had to listen to one more story about how well their daughters played the pianofortes or how accomplished they were at needlepoint, he’d run from the assembly hall screaming.

He had met almost everyone present at the dance and had no desire to continue any of the acquaintances. He was only here because of the wager placed in a betting book at White’s. A damned fool named Gerald Langley had put down in the books that anyone who plucked the fruit of this girl’s vine would receive five thousand pounds from him. Langley was a brute with little in the way of good sense and far too much coin. Ambrose had no idea why Langley had it in for the Earl of Rockford’s daughter, but he did. After reading the bet, Ambrose had penned his name to the challenge and notified Langley he had accepted the wager.

For once in his life he was trying to do the right thing by a woman. It was a bit ironic, though, that saving the woman required compromising her. But the Earl of Rockford and his father had been friends, and Ambrose felt he owed it to Rockford to win the wager and keep the lady safe from true scoundrels. No other man would take the care with her that he would and see to it that her first time with a man was a pleasurable experience.

He had one month to seduce Rockford’s daughter and provide proof of this seduction in London. As the lady in question had never been to London, there was much speculation among the men at his club whether she was a diamond of the first water or a dowdy creature. The betting book listed her age as twenty-two, young enough not to be an ape leader, a nasty term for women nearing spinsterhood.

Apparently Rockford wasn’t one for traditions. Any father wishing to ensure his daughter’s future would have brought her to London at seventeen or eighteen, had her presented to the queen, and then made the round of balls to hunt for a husband.

Yet Rockford had not done any of that. He’d kept his daughter in the country, living a quiet life. An unplucked fruit to tempt the worst sort of men in White’s to bet upon the taking of her maidenhead for their own amusement.

Normally Ambrose had little desire to compete in wagers, especially ones which involved the corruption of innocents. It was not out of some moral principle, but rather a dislike of virgins. They tended to fall in love and cling to the man who took their innocence. But after witnessing the sort of men discussing whether to take the bet that night, Ambrose decided he would do this innocent lady a favor. He’d penned his name in the books, taking up the wager, and sent a letter to Rockford, renewing their acquaintance.

A letter from Rockford arrived only a few days later, inviting Ambrose to this ball and to spend a few weeks at Rockford’s home as a guest. It was the perfect opportunity for Ambrose to cozy up to the man’s daughter and see what sort of creature he would soon be bedding.

If only he knew what the lady looked like. In the chaotic din full of dancing and music, he could not find a single young lady among the crush that he was willing to bed. It wasn’t that the young ladies weren’t attractive. They were, but none were to his taste. Innocent young ladies had never appealed to him. If his friend Gareth Fairfax had been there, Gareth would have been laughing at him. Gareth was stuck in his own hell—the poor fool was happily married. Married! Ambrose couldn’t think of anything more terrifying than being stuck with one woman for the rest of his life. Helen was a darling creature and perfectly suited to Gareth, and Ambrose supposed it would be not too terrible to share a bed with a woman like her. But still, to be leg-shackled?

I would rather die in a thousand unspeakable ways than stand in a bloody church and tie myself to one woman for the rest of my days.

All it takes is one passionate embrace, a kiss from the depths of his soul and a night of wild abandon.

My Review

*I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.

This is a short and steamy romance. I loved that it started with the duel and had just enough backstory to explain things. The bargain is very shocking for everyone that knows about it, but it plays out nicely.  I did love how they were instantly connected and I loved the ending.

Helen is great and brave. She wasn’t just looking out for her brother when she decided to take his place but was looking out for herself too. She never backed down and keep quiet when scared or mad. I loved how she stormed out near the end and how she kept her brother from the duel.

Gareth is a broken man that needs love again. At first, he came off as mean and a bit cruel, but as soon as he was back at his home he changed. He had changed after his wife died but wasn’t as he seemed and his housekeeper knew it and could tell what would happen. I loved how quickly he opened up and when he told her brother what he thought.

It was short, but the pace was good.

Torn from her life of privilege by her father’s death, Kate Morgan relies on her knowledge of fine things as a fence for stolen goods in one of London’s dark and depraved rookeries. The last man she ever expects, or wants, to see again is Daniel O’Reilly, the man who promised to love, honor and protect her, but who instead fled amidst accusations of murder.

One drunken night cost Daniel O’Reilly the woman he loved and the life he’d worked so hard to create. If he ever wants to reclaim that life—and Kate—he’ll not only have to prove he’s innocent of murder, but convince the pistol-wielding beauty to forgive his many sins.

With a killer on the loose, time is running out for them…

My Review

I have read this book twice now because it is different from most historical romances. There are no balls and fancy estates in this book it gives you an insight into the life of living in the rookeries and slums of London and that’s what makes it a fantastic read. I loved that this book also involved real history with the murders and showed the horrible things that went on.

Kate is not your typical heroine, but also is at the same time. She is smart and strong and doesn’t take anything off of anyone, but she is also broken because of everything that has happened to her. She doesn’t want to rely on anyone again and thrives on being in control of her life now. At first, you may not like her, but you have to get to know her and you will slowly understand her and feel for her.

Danial is a different man than he was before, but he is still changing and finding his way. He was making a better life for himself when he was accused of murder and fled thinking that would protect Kate. When he came back he tried to pick up where they left off in a way and he ran hot and cold at times, but he also could see past everything that happened to Kate without judgment.

I knew there was something about Owen, but couldn’t put my finger on it until it was revealed. I never knew what was going to happen next and I want to know more about the gentleman thief so much.

Juliana, Lady Courtenay, is no stranger to scandal. Not after her late husband died in the bed of another man. Now that the mourning period for her unwanted marriage is over, she is impatient to celebrate her freedom-and what better way than with a love affair during the most festive time of year? Finally she can experience the excitement of spending the entire night with a man completely devoted to her pleasure. Except when she asks Lord Misrule to be her very first lover, the rogue declines.

Lord Misrule is eager for a diversion that will banish the regrets that always resurface during the Christmas season. Yet he cannot accept the desirable widow’s tempting offer. If he did, he knew it would be impossible to adhere to his strict rules for affairs- no debutantes, no innocents, and no attachments-all of which are necessary to prevent future misfortune.

But when it seems Lady Courtenay will choose a loess-than-honorable man to be her lover, Lord Misrule’s chivalrous nature insists he charge to her rescue. He offers her a twelve-day affair, intent on providing her with a fortnight of pleasure without causing her heart, or his, a lifetime of harm.

My Review

I really enjoyed this one. It’s scandalous enough to have your husband die in the bed of another woman, but another man is a scandal that many would have hid from, but not Juliana. She is now free to do what she wants as a widow and has a plan. This one did have some Christmas magic to it by banishing their pasts. I loved how they both hand things they regretted and it brought them together.

Juliana is very forward and clear about what she wants but is also still innocent. She did not let her marriage and the scandal pull her down. I loved everything about her and the way she thought about things.

Nicholas got his nickname because of things he did and he has regretted it since it caused something tragic. He is a very honorable man even though he doesn’t realize it. I loved how he freaked out if he broke one of his rules.

They both had friends that knew them very well and told them what was what. I wanted a bit more back story, but there is enough to understand them.

He doesn’t need his eyes to uncover her true beauty.

Cedric, Viscount Sheridan, is cursed. Once the ton’s golden boy, the loss of his sight has left him a reclusive shell of a man. His days of womanizing, horse racing and pistol shooting lost forever.

Offered the chance to recapture a small part of his old life, he can’t refuse-even if it means accepting the shocking proposal of the infamous ice maiden, Anne Chessley.

Still reeling from her father’s death, Anne’s deepest wish is to avoid the hordes of fortune hunters who will soon be beating down her door. Proposing marriage to Cedric is an act of desperation, his unexpected acceptance a strange and wonderful dream.

His only stipulation: she must respond passionately and wantonly in his bed. Her agreement barely crosses her lips before he begins a sensual assault on the icy walls bitter secrets have built around her heart.

Yet even as they catch a glimpse of true happiness, betrayal is poised to sweep them away on opposing tides of danger.

Warning: Contains an outwardly aloof heroine with a secretly tender heart, a once-notorious rake who isn’t quite as rusty at seduction as he feared, and a band of rogues who join together to make sure happily-ever-afters do come true.

My Review

After the last book, I couldn’t wait to read this one and it didn’t disappoint. This one kept me on the edge of my seat with everything that threatened them. I loved getting to hear the whole story behind the horses he won and how the league met. I really enjoyed how much the league has changed and I laugh at how they talk like the abduction was a normal thing for them to do. Just when I thought they were good her past came up and caused a fight that had a twist I did not expect to happen. I jumped up and down at the ending.

Anne is very smart and loving girl even if she does hide behind ice walls. I loved how she didn’t let her past define her and had no plans to hide it from him. She was very strong and didn’t seem to be afraid of anything. Her father sounded like a good man with how he didn’t like some of the rules and approved of Cedric.

Cedric’s blindness definitely affected him more than he realized. He lived in fear of falling and didn’t want to be around people. I loved how he changed when away from London and only wanted to shake him once during the fight, but he quickly realized his mistake. He is a very loving and open minded, but will kill anyone that threatens the people he loves.

Ashton is becoming a favorite of mine. He always seems to know what to do and doesn’t jump to conclusions. In this book, we get to know Jonathan a bit more and meet a great staff member of Cedric’s.

Georgiana Dudley, the ‘Ice Duchess’, has just emerged from mourning after a nine-year marriage of convenience to the Duke of Darby, her twin brother’s lover. Deeply hurt by a scoundrel a decade ago, Georgie swore she would never turn her head for any man, let alone another rakehell. But then she encounters the wickedly handsome and all too charming Rafe Landsbury, the Earl of Markham and against her better judgment, her interest is reluctantly aroused. An affair may be impossible to resist but dare she trust Lord Markham with her most intimate secrets… and her heart?

Society believes Rafe to be a diplomat but for many years he has been working on the Continent as a spy for the Crown. Leaving the shadowy world of espionage behind, he returns to London with the intention of finding a wife. When he is paired with the frosty yet fascinating Duchess of Darby at the picquet table during a ton ball, he is intrigued. Do-or-die man that he is, he’s certainly not going to let her cool demeanor dissuade him from pursuing her.

When Rafe’s dark past returns to endanger Georgie, he is determined to protect her at all costs, even if that means hiding who he once was. With the stakes so high, both Georgie and Rafe must decide if love is a risk worth taking…

My Review

This was my first time reading something by this author and I loved it from page one. This is a very steamy read, but it doesn’t take away from the story. I loved that even though her marriage was a marriage of convenience they both truly cared for each other and were best friends. There is so much in this book to love and to figure out. They were meant to be together and they kept being thrown together until she let down her shield and let the ice duchess melt away. I was shocked when what happened to her years ago was finally told, but it explained so much about her marriage and why she didn’t want men around. The ending left me wanting more!

Georgiana is a favorite heroine of mine. She has been through so much but keeps her head up and goes on. Her past has affected to her badly, but also made her a strong woman. I loved how she and her brother were together and took care of each other.

Rafe has his own dark past that has affected him badly, but being a spy meant no one fully knew what happened. You love him for everything he does to protect Georgina from danger and to help her with her past even if his ways are a bit shocking at times.

I loved all the characters epically her brother Jonathon. He had a great personality and would do anything to take care of his sister or make her happy. I also loved that the people that knew about her brother and husband didn’t judge them or make a big deal out of it. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Harper Cabot, the proprietor of Cabot’s Haberdashery, was devastated by the death of his wife to the point he cannot pack away any of her belongings. Everyone expects his mourning to end soon, but he is devoted to his business and ignores how lonely his life has become in every other respect. A chance encounter brings Amy Mellish to Harper’s notice when he discovers the woman huddled behind his store one bitterly cold night before Christmas. Stirred by compassion and unexpected attraction, he offers Amy shelter in his home…only to have the woman seduce him before the night is over.

Amy has long admired the proper Harper Cabot from a distance, believing a prostitute very far below his notice and unneeded in his life. Although saddened by his loss, Amy very much needs Harper’s protection and boldly strikes a bargain to stay in exchange for satisfying his lust. In Harper’s arms, Amy discovers passion beyond her experience even though the signs of the late Mrs. Cabot linger in every corner of his home. Although begun as a diversion from shared sorrows, can their brief affair overcome the bitter memories of Christmases past and create the lasting connection they both secretly desire?

My Review

This is a very steamy read and is different in a good way. Christmas doesn’t bring good memories for Harper Cabot since his wife died a year ago on Christmas day. He says he will never found another woman to love so he keeps himself busy in his shop that reminds him of her every day. He never thought that finding a young woman taking shelter behind his shop would change his life forever.

Even though it is a little fast paced it is a very good story. There was a little twist that I was expecting with it came to Amy’s past that made me want more. It was nice to see a totally different way for a couple to meet and fall in love.

Amy is very brazen and strong woman. I liked her from the start and that she didn’t hide anything from Harper. When hearing how she was treated by a client of her mother’s I thought it was strange and then it made sense in the end.

Harper is the dream man for many women and he doesn’t realize it. You could tell he was lonely,  but he didn’t hide from people and tried to be happy. He wasn’t shy like you would think he would be. I wanted to know a bit more about his family and past to really get to know him.

I wanted to know a bit more about Harper’s family and past to really get to know him. His sister sounded very interesting.

This book sucks you in from the first page. As soon as I started reading and realized what she was doing I was hooked. Charles and Gillian are total opposites and it is funny to watch them interact, but also sweet. They fight and drive each other nuts, but they enjoy it most of the time. There was a small mystery when it came to the smugglers and I went back and forth about who I believed was involved and if they were involved or not.

I wanted Gillian as a friend! I completely understood her and loved her attitude about gossip. She didn’t let being the illegitimate child of a prince stand in her way and she didn’t hide from it. She is protective of her family and friends. When she stood up for her mother and friends in the ballroom I cheered. She may have seemed selfish, but she actually thought about others most of the time. Plus who doesn’t love a heroine that carries weapons?

Charles comes off as perfect, but not in a way that would put you off. He doesn’t flaunt his title unless needed and he is not stuck up at all but is always proper. He cares about his family more than himself. He can shock you at times with things he says and does especially around his sister and when no one is around to hear him. He will put someone in their place when needed and in public too.

I loved Charles’s sister and wanted to know the rest of his family. The same for Gillian’s family because of her mother who is just so sweet.
