My Review

*I received a copy in exchange for my honest review

This is my first time reading a book by Elizabeth Keysian and I’m hooked! I loved how they were at odds at all times but drawn to each other at the same time. There are a couple twists surrounding his sister and what happened that I didn’t seeing coming. I loved the ending and how I never was sure what was going to happen.

Cassie is determined to get what she wants no matter what. I loved how she saw things from a calm point of view and defended people. She had to learn about herself and it caused some interesting things.

Ned has a temper but his heart is in the right place. I loved that he would go to such lengths to find out about his sister. He met his match with Cassie and learned to think before acting.

authorkate2a.jpgElizabeth first started writing fiction when she was eight, encouraged to do so by her Head Teacher father, who needed something to keep her quiet during school holidays. Her favorite topics were mermaids, ghosts, Norman knights and quests, and she illustrated and decorated her own books. She emerged from the world of her imagination to read History at the University of London, after which she spent many years working as an archaeologist and artifact illustrator. She then became a primary school teacher, after which she moved to museum education work, and display and collections management.

Elizabeth has been involved in Medieval, Tudor, and English Civil War re-enactment and has enjoyed sword-play and traditional archery, excelling in neither. She lived for seven years on a Knights Templar estate in Essex where she pursued her interest in historical textiles, cookery and medicine. She loves anything to do with the past, and still looks down holes in the ground to see if there’s anything archaeological in them. There generally isn’t.

She has written fifteen historical romances since moving to the West of England in 1997, the landscape and history of which have inspired the “Wayward in Wessex” series. Book #1 in the series, “Distracting the Duke”, has recently been published by Entangled Publishing.

Edith is very different. She wants proof before she does anything and isn’t afraid of anything. I loved her from the start because she always seemed to have a plan and she spoke her mind. She also thought of others first even when she was in danger.

Triston will do anything for his sisters even when it mixes with his past. His scandal was not one I expected and it explained a lot. I loved him right away because of how he was with his sisters and that he was a quick thinker.

I have seen many oxen with broader shoulders,”—she smirked, pulling back and leaning to the side as if to get a glimpse of his backside—“and far more accentuated hindquarters.”

She gulped.

No laughter remained as he narrowed his eyes on her. “Did you just compare my physique to that of a farm animal?”

Edith took a step back—damnation, she would not cower to him. “If you prefer, I can select another animal. A donkey, perhaps? They are well-known for their obstinacy. Or better yet, an African lion, I have read they are intimidating creatures.”

You think me intimidating?” It was Torrington who took a step back this time, as if her words had wounded him. “Wait, do not answer that question—I have a far more important one: why do you keep appearing everywhere I am?”

It is not I who keeps appearing,” Edith corrected. “I was minding my own business outside of Abercorn’s townhouse. You are the one who scared me from the tree. And you were the one who caught my eye in the ballroom. And I was enjoying an afternoon in the park when—“ She clamped her mouth shut.

Enjoying an afternoon in the park until…you saw me and decided to follow?” he demanded. “I may very well be as large as an ox, or as stubborn as a donkey, or even as domineering as a lion, but at least I am not a snake—slithering and sneaking about, ready to bite and poison when the mood strikes.”

Edith gasped, covering her mouth with her hand.

Oh, you find it belittling to be compared to a bloody animal?” he sneered. “Well, I find it insulting to be lied to, followed, and scrutinized by a woman I do not know.”

Edith sighed. “I have not been following you, I swear to it.”

Not a complete lie, or at least she hadn’t been at Lord Abercorn’s townhouse to spy on Triston—she allowed herself to think of him by his given name—nor had she attended the ball with Ophelia and Luci expecting to see him. And the park, well, that was rather serendipitous. She had decided to keep an eye on him, but she’d never thought to follow him out of London proper.

Edith glanced to the window, but the drapes were pulled securely shut. “The day must be growing late. My parents will surely be wondering where I am when I don’t arrive home on schedule.”

I know what you are up to, Lady Edith Pelton.” His stance widened as he surveyed her from head to toe.

In the Rogues to Riches historical romance series, Cinderella stories aren’t just for princesses… Sigh-worthy Regency rogues sweep strong-willed young ladies into whirlwind romance with rollicking adventure.

Nondescript “good girl” Miss Camellia Grenville only ever opens her mouth when forced to sing at her family’s musicales. That is, until the night she infiltrates the ton’s most scandalous masquerade ball on behalf of her sister, and finds herself in the arms—and the bed—of the one man she’d sworn to hate.

Irresistibly arrogant and unapologetically sensuous, infamous rake Lord Wainwright always gets his way. When he accepts a wager to turn his rakish image respectable in just forty days, he never anticipates falling for an anonymous masked lover…or that discovering her identity would destroy them both.

My Review

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I love books that have masquerade parties and this one is a new favorite! Behind masks they both were able to be themselves without worrying about duty or what was expected. I loved how they were together both masked and unmasked and the hint of Cinderella with the earring. I wasn’t expecting the twist of a mystery to come and can’t wait to read more about that. I highlighted so many parts in this one because there was so much to love.

Camellia is the dutiful and quiet girl on the outside but is very bold and free when masked. I love how slowly that boldness started coming out to show the real her. I loved her from the start because she decided to take a chance and be herself.

Michael is the Lord of Pleasure, but not like they say. He has a very caring side and the real him will melt your heart even more. I loved him right away when he made that wager.

I really love her sisters and hope to see them again.

Excerpt

Breathless, Camellia gazed up into Lord X’s fathomless black mask. She could not see his eyes. Even his brow was hidden. There was no way to know what expression he wore. Nothing to go on except the words he spoke. Yet there could be no other answer to his query.

Bolder. She had longed to be bolder, yearned to be someone else since the moment she realized it was too late to change her personality. Dahlia was forceful, Bryony was fearless, but Camellia watched from the shadows. Looking out for her sisters. Being a good girl. A proper young lady. Minding every one of high society’s interminable rules as if the price for bending them was death. Perhaps the cost of denying her own desires was just as dear.

She was tired of being perfect. The only way to never break a rule, to avoid disappointing anyone’s expectations, was to never do anything at all. That wasn’t life at all.

Yet who was at fault? If she was nothing more substantial than a music box, nothing but a dutiful automaton respectable enough to possess an Almack’s voucher and too terrified to use it, then it was because she had let herself be programmed that way.

She wanted to change. Needed to. Perhaps it wouldn’t be for the better, but it would be more authentic—she would be more herself—if once in a while she did what she wanted, instead of molding to the wishes of everyone around her.

Bolder,” she repeated. “I want to be bolder. It’s the one thing about my life I would alter.”

I can grant you that wish.” He pushed his goblet away and sprang to his feet. “Be fearless here. Tonight. With me.”

He held out his hand.

Simultaneously hopeful and nervous, she placed her fingers in his.

Whatever it is that you want, you need only be bold enough to ask.” He pulled her to him.

Her heart pounded so loudly, she feared he could feel it through his layers of shirt and waistcoat.

What do you want?” he asked softly. “Be bold. Let me give it to you.”

What did she want, here, with him? She closed her eyes and let the night be her guide.

Now that they were no longer nestled on a woolen blanket, the breeze was cool against her bare upper arms… but not overly so. The warmth from Lord X’s body heated her whether they were lying prone or standing chest-to-chest beneath the moonlight.

The scent of his breath so close to her lips was as sweet as the wine they had shared. The sounds of the night—if indeed there were any other than the thundering of her heart—were eclipsed by the siren call of the orchestra, whose seductive waltz spilled out through the open doorways and up from the balcony overlooking the garden to kiss their feet, even out here on the roof.

She opened her eyes. There was only one answer. One thing among the many she’d never done that he alone could give her. Without scandal. Tonight.

I want to waltz,” she admitted hesitantly. “But…”

He shook his head. “With me, you never have to justify yourself or your desires. I will never say no.”

Her breath caught at his words. “Why?”

Because I want to be the reason for the sparkles in your eyes.” His husky voice was intoxicating. “You want to waltz? We waltz.”

He took her hand and turned toward the stairs.

She held her ground.

He looked over his shoulder. Though the expression behind his mask was a mystery, every inch of his posture asked a silent question.

Here,” she said. Boldly. “I want to waltz here. Where it’s just you and me and the stars.”

He stepped forward and took her into his arms without another word.

At first, she thought he might kiss her. Her heart thumped. She was pressed tight against him, her lips tilted up toward the sensual line of his mouth.

And then he took her hand in his and swung her in time to the music.

Her pulse thrilled at his touch. Never had a moment been so magical as dancing across a rooftop in the arms of a dashing stranger. The wind whipped through her hair, tugging tendrils free from her careful chignon, fluttering the ruby silk of her skirt about her legs.

None of that mattered. All she cared about was the hand holding hers. The warmth of his fingers against the small of her back. The strength in his arms, his body, as he whirled her from one stunning night view of London to another.

The night was crisp but his embrace heated her to her core. She could no longer feel her feet flying across the roof to their private rhythm, or the whispery material of her gown fluttering against her silk stockings in the breeze.

All she could feel were her trembling fingers tucked against his warm palm, the strength of his arm tucked about her waist, her lips curving into the widest, most unabashed smile she’d ever experienced.

This was life!

Every part of him was danger and romance and adventure. He transported her not just from one soaring section of the roof to another, but to an alternate world. One in which she was exactly the woman she pretended to be. Carefree and wild and bubbling with joy at the consuming, heady sensation of being truly, completely, wonderfully alive.

Being in his arms stole her breath, yet gave her strength. He did not look through her as so many men had done throughout her life, but rather as though he could not look anywhere else. As if the sight of her in his embrace was so entrancing, so intoxicating, that he too had forgotten everything and everyone until all that remained was the two of them. Their bodies entwined in a waltz that found its music in their very souls.

Tonight she wouldn’t run away at midnight. She would dance in his arms until dawn.

Blurb

When the new earl inherits, poor relation Miss Rebecca Bond must wed immediately or be out on her ear. The only man she’s ever loved is summoned to hear the will—but he already rejected her so soundly that they haven’t spoken in years. Yet who better than a rakish Viscount to teach her how to snare a gentleman who appreciates her charms?

Daniel Goodenham, Lord North Barrows, regrets nothing more than the lost friendship with the one woman who treated him like a man, not a title. Fate has given him the perfect pretext to win her forgiveness—even if it means having to matchmake her to someone else. But now that she’s back in his life, he’ll do anything to convince her to choose him instead…

This story was first featured in the Vexed anthology.

My Review

Loved the start of this story! I was shocked that pretty much everyone in the castle forgot she was there and thought everything was a ghost. The new earl seems to not care what happens to her as long as she is gone and he doesn’t have to take care of her. I loved the maze and how the back story.
You have to love Rebecca from the start. She kept herself busy by going over the estate books and correcting figures and she would stand up to anyone. She had no desire to marry and could actually make it on her own, she had proved that already. She is still angry at Danial but understood why he did what he years ago.

Danial did not come off as the rogue as much as I expected, but I loved him. He loved being in parliament and doing everything involved with it more than the parties. You fall in love with him the moment he leaves for the castle because what he did has bothered him for years.

I was expecting more from the haunted castle and for some reason, I want to know more about Danial’s grandmother and why she acted like she did. Overall a good story to get you in the mood for Halloween.

Excerpt

Just as the last hint of sunlight slithered past the horizon, the rocky, wind-lashed terrain of Cornwall came into view. Daniel straightened his spine. The chill was already seeping through the cracks in the buffeted carriage.

The driver gulped, his gaze uncertain. “Nightfall has arrived, milord. Shall I find a posting-house?”

Daniel shook his head, his skin tingling from the close proximity to Castle Keyvnor. “No. Let’s keep going. We’re almost there.”

Even as he said the words, the monstrous castle rose from the darkness, its looming towers an even deeper black than the interminable night enshrouding them.

A familiar prickle danced across his clammy skin as the carriage rattled over the ancient bridge across the long-dry moat, and on through a massive iron gate. The castle looked darker than he remembered. Larger. More menacing.

Rebecca was somewhere inside those walls. He just had to find her.

He dashed from the carriage and up the slick stone steps of Castle Keyvnor as torrents of rain spilled from the black, thunderous sky.

The horrendous downpour was not only a fitting welcome back to the castle grounds, but the only weather he ever recalled Castle Keyvnor having. If the sun happened to shine over the sparse seaside village of Bocka Morrow, the castle was still be buffeted by icy winds and cloaked in shadow.

Ignoring the sheet of rain cascading from the brim of his beaver hat, he reached for the brass doorknocker dangling from the maw of a stone lion.

The door swung open before his fingers even touched the knocker. Yet no one presented himself.

Daniel straightened his spine. No sense dallying. Time to head straight into the mouth of the beast.

Morris, the castle’s longtime butler, strode into the entryway just as Daniel slid his soaked top hat from his head.

No point in asking who had opened the door, given that the butler was only now arriving. Castle Keyvnor never had answers. Only a surfeit of questions.

“Lord North-Barrows.” The butler smiled. “Right on time. Your chamber has been readied.”

Daniel didn’t smile back. Nor did he know how he could be right on time, when he hadn’t sent word of his impending arrival because even he hadn’t known for certain when he would arrive.

As the butler divested Daniel of his wet outer garments, a quartet of footmen emerged from a darkened corridor without being summoned and marched outside to the waiting carriage.

Daniel eyed the castle’s dark interior with apprehension. If the servants knew he was coming, why the devil couldn’t they light a sconce or two?

“The footmen will bring your trunks to your chamber shortly.” The butler gestured toward the main stone staircase. “A fire awaits you in the hearth.”

Of course it did.

Daniel inclined his head, eager to dry himself before a fire regardless of how or why its warmth awaited him. But a shimmer of white caught his eye.

An apparition had appeared at the top of the stairs. No—not an apparition.

Rebecca.

Her bone-white gown fluttered from one of the castle’s many drafts, giving her haunting silhouette the blurred edges of a ghost. From this distance, the features of her pale face were smudged by shadow. The glossy dark curls he recalled so fondly were invisible against the yawning blackness of the unlit upstairs corridor. His entire body was on edge.

Nervous, he smiled up at her.

There was no way to know if she returned his smile.

He doubted it. The last time he’d seen her at Castle Keyvnor, he’d cruelly rejected her in front of witnesses. And the last time she’d been in London…he hadn’t spoken to her at all.

His chest tightened. He was lucky she hadn’t come to the landing solely to toss water upon his head.

Perhaps she was saving that for later.

“Rebecca?” Because the soaring stairwell had no balustrade, Daniel placed his damp palm against the cold stone wall for balance. The last thing he needed was for wet soles to send him sliding to his death before he could even make his grand apology.

“It’s Miss Bond,” floated the soft, familiar voice from overhead.

“I know,” Daniel called back as he hurried up the rest of the stairs. “Rebecca, it’s me. Daniel.”

“I know,” she echoed as he rounded the final step. Her eyes were dark and luminous in the pale porcelain of her face. “Good evening, Lord North-Barrows. I trust Morris has seen to your luggage.”

Ah. So he had lost first-naming privileges. And was to be treated with the same distant politesse one might use to welcome a stranger.

He deserved that and more.

“Please,” he said. “You must still call me Daniel. I know I was awful to you, and you have every right to be vexed with me. I admit it. I behaved abominably and am here to apologize. I was foolish and wrong.”

“Were you?” Her expressionless dark eyes gazed right through him. “I’m sure I don’t recall.”

His muscles tightened. Of course she recalled. She had the cleverest mind of anyone he’d ever met. But by pretending she couldn’t remember his crimes, she didn’t have to forgive him. Or acknowledge his heartfelt apology. He forced his fingers to unclench.

Despite the murky shadows of the ill-lit corridor, she was even more beautiful than last he’d seen her. He drank her in. She had been the prettiest of that year’s crop of debutantes during her come-out five years ago, but now she was ravishing.

Girlish cheeks had turned into high cheekbones. A willowy frame had become womanly curves. Her innocence had been replaced by mysteriousness. He didn’t know this Rebecca Bond any longer. But oh, how he wanted to. If only they could erase the past.

He yearned to reach for her. Once, she would have welcomed his touch, his embrace.

Tonight, she was just as likely to push him off of the landing.

In the gaming hells of eighteenth century London, orphan Caro Worth is leading a double life. By day she plays a proper gentlewoman on the lookout for a wealthy husband. By night she plays the infamous Angelica, her fictional half-sister with a talent for cards and an ability to finance the life her respectable self has built. An introduction to a rich Marquis brings marriage and security within Caro’s grasp…until the arrival of the unpredictable and totally ineligible Mr. Tobias Felton.

Dismayed by Felton’s persistent appearances, shocking frankness, and enigmatic green eyes, Caro watches helplessly as he comes closer than anyone to guessing her secret, but when complete and utter ruin threatens, she finds that Felton’s suspicions just might become her salvation. As the walls she has built to protect herself crumble down around her, Caro learns that no matter how careful your plans, life and love have a habit of falling quite spectacularly out of control!

My Review

My Rating: ❤❤❤❤❤

Spice Level: 💋

This was my first time reading a book by Philippa Jane Keyworth and I am now a fan! I stayed up until 2:30 am reading the whole book. I love that this one had the powdered hair and beauty patches because I rarely see books with that. They seemed like totally different people, but were alike in many ways when the walls were down. I was not expecting the twist with the Marquis and what he would do or how her brother would be.

Caro is a strong woman that has done what she must to survive after her father dies. I was on edge thinking someone besides Tobias would start to figure it out. She tried so hard to convince herself that Tobias plan would end a different way.

Tobias was very different because he was a gentleman when he wanted to be, but most of the time he said and did what he wanted. I loved how he started changing when he realized his father might follow through with his threat and when he met Caro.

I loved Lady Felton because she was not as quiet as you think at first. I love a good duel scene!

About the Author03_philippa-jane-keyworth

Philippa Jane Keyworth, known to her friends as Pip, has been writing since she was twelve in every notebook she could find. Originally trained as a horse-riding instructor, Philippa went on to become a copywriter before beginning a degree in History. A born again Christian, Philippa lives in the south of England with her handsome husband.

Philippa has always written stories and believes that, since it is one of her loves and passions, she always will. In her early writing career, she dabbled in a variety of genres, but it was the encouragement of a friend to watch a film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice that began her love affair with the British Regency. Since then, she has watched every Regency film and TV series she could get her hands on and become well acquainted with Georgette Heyer’s novels which gave her the inspiration to write her own.

Both as a reader and a writer, Philippa believes it is important to escape into a world you yourself would want to live in. This is why she writes stories that will draw you into the characters’ joys and heartaches in a world apart from our own. Her debut novel, The Widow’s Redeemer (Madison Street Publishing, 2012), is a traditional Regency romance bringing to life the romance between a young widow with an indomitable spirit and a wealthy viscount with an unsavory reputation. The novel has been received well by readers and reviewers who have praised the heartfelt story and admirable characters. Her second novel, The Unexpected Earl (Madison Street Publishing, 2014), explores another romance in the Regency era when an impetuous young woman has her life turned upside down by the reappearance of the earl who jilted her six years ago. Her third novel a Georgian romance will come out at the end of 2016.

Today the spotlight is shining on Sue London and her The Fairy Palace inspired novella The Fairy Palace.

Excerpt from The Fairy Palace:

Oscar stared out the window, waiting for dawn to tint the sky. Earlier, Melanie and her maid chatted and giggled between themselves for a time, but sleep claimed them in the wee hours when the carriage was gently rocking and the sky was dark as ink. Usually he would sleep as well, but just now he was wondering what in the bloody hell he’d gotten himself into. It was perhaps unfortunate that his driver and valet were fairly well used to decamping in the middle of the night, and not even the two young ladies in tow had received so much as a blink. Was he known to be so craven that nothing was a surprise anymore? He had, for want of a better word, kidnapped a lady of gentle breeding for unknown purposes. By God, he would make sure that her next household would defend her with some aplomb. Not that the lady herself had put up any resistance to his plan, and he would grant that most servants would prefer not to cross a duke’s son. But to let her be so casually abducted? Abominable.

It didn’t pass his notice that he was criticizing the servants for not stopping him from something he could have chosen not to do. But dammit, Melanie deserved better than a husband that she couldn’t even feign a liking for. He was aghast that willful, spirited Melanie sat there on her bed and spoke of growing up and leaving behind her dreams. Would Arthur give up on Camelot? Of course not. How, then, could she give up? He wouldn’t let her. He had, in fact, irrevocably changed the course of her life this night, with no idea of how that might play out. All he knew was that this Mr. Hartley couldn’t have her. Not if marriage to the man meant she gave up her dreams.

However, as the sky tinted with soft light and he could see her dozing on the opposite carriage bench, he began to doubt himself. What did he know of how to navigate polite society? Yes, he could be charming, and his last name opened a multitude of doors. But a young lady would need savvy to land a reasonable husband. She needed her reputation, flawless etiquette, and excellent sponsorship. God’s blood, he couldn’t spend five minutes without running afoul of polite rules! Primarily on purpose, but it still made him a poor gallant to escort an unmarried young lady. He should be protecting her reputation, not hying her off to London in the middle of the night.

She looked surprisingly sweet and innocent in sleep. Her dark lashes lay like tiny fans on her cheeks, and her mouth was curved in an enigmatic smile to rival Mona Lisa’s. It was almost hard to believe that she could steal a whole tray of tarts, or climb trees for the express purpose of making Lady Eunomia demand she come down. He smiled as he remembered her youthful indiscretions. She was a mix of wild and sweet, like a potent elixir. He loved her. He loved her, and would not stand idly while she made a loveless match. He would not be able to live with himself if a marriage broke her spirit.

Questions & Answers with Sue London:

Q1-What fairytale did you choose for your inspiration and why?

The Fairy Palace of the Quicken Trees, one of the tales in the Fenian Cycle of Irish myths that focuses on Oscar, who is our hero this time around. It is used very metaphorically, however, because I can’t have a Regency hero literally kill the King of the World.

Q2-What was your favorite fairytale as a child?

One of my favorites is The Princess and the Pea, which my husband says is very fitting because I can’t sleep if there is the slightest discomfort. (That’s his perspective. Since I have photos of him literally sleeping on rocks and Igloo coolers I say HE is the crazy one.)

Q3-What is your favorite line from your book?

If this was truly what ladies were wearing in Town, then she had to question their refinement.

My Interview with Christina McKnight

What or who inspired you to become a writer?

Growing up, I was the student who wrote ten pages for a two page book report. In college my dissertation was twice the required page count. My mom hounded me for years to write fiction—specifically, romance. We frequently read the same books and I’d guess the ending half way through…to both our surprise, I was right most of the time. If I wasn’t right, my mom said my endings were better. It has always been my mom’s belief in me, as a writer, that inspires me to write the next story.

Has there been anything about being a writer that has surprised you?

I would have to say the amount of work that goes into a writing career. To think of all the time, effort, and resources that authors spend to release one book…now multiply that by 10 books, 20 books, or even 50. This takes more than a passion for writing, it takes dedication to your craft and commitment to the book industry.

Do you need quiet to write or do you listen to music or tv when writing?

I have to have quiet. I do my best work when holed up in my office and no one is home.

What’s your favorite snack when writing?

Oh, is wine a snack? LOL. For many years, before I became a full time writer, I wrote in the evenings and on weekends. This meant that my late night writing sessions were compliment with great wine. That meant having to work hard to break my craving for wine when I’m writing at 9am! Now, I keep a bag of pretzels close at all times.

Any advice for aspiring writers like myself?

Don’t give up. Allow yourself time to find your own process with writing. There is no right way to write a book. This means that there are unlimited ways to get the job done. Trust yourself and the process you settle on.

Haven’t started the series yet?

The Thief Steals Her Earl (Craven House Book One) is on sale for just 99cents!
