Where Have I Been? Life and writing Update

Hi everyone!

If you’ve noticed that my reviews have not been going up three times a week for quite a while there’s a reason for that. I thought it was a good time to let you know what’s going on and it’s nothing bad. It’s all actually good stuff.

I’ve been busy and not able to read as much I would like to. My work as a virtual assistant keeps me pretty and as a beta reader keeps me busy. This stuff you still see on my social media. But what you probably don’t know is I also run another blog. My other blog is a beauty and lifestyle blog and in the last six or so months has really taken off. Doing photos and writing posts for over there take up a lot of my time.

Right now I’m trying to learn how to balance everything and not be running on little to no sleep. I have no plans to stop reading and reviewing. So dont worry.

Writing Update

This is also something that is taking up my time. If you’ve followed me for a while then you know I’ve had a couple of stories I’ve started. Well, I’m on another new story, but I’m handling things differently this time. I realized that being an organized mess doesn’t work with writing for me like other things. I’ve also learned that even though I’m a history nut, my mind doesn’t want to write historical romance.

My muses and scene ideas always come to me in a present-day form. So I am working on a contemporary romance. There are still cowboys involved so don’t worry about that. I am also plotting and being more organized with this story so I don’t end up with a mess and dropping it.

Some Exciting News

Tuesday if nothing happens I will be filming a video with the author and blogger H.T. King for her YouTube channel. We will be talking about romances books. I’m excited and nervous because I’ve never done anything like this. The video will be out in March and I will have a blog post to go with it then too.

What I’m Reading This Week: Emma Locke and Diana Gabaldon Plus a Writing Update

stencil.blog-post-feature (2)

This week I am jumping back into the Outlander world by getting back to reading The Fiery Cross. I took a break from it months ago because it is very slow in the beginning and I was frustrated with it so I stepped back from it for awhile. I’m also going to be reading The Art of Ruining a Rake by Emma Locke. I have been loving her Naughty Girls series and can’t wait to see what happens in this one.

I’m also going to be reading The Art of Ruining a Rake by Emma Locke. I have been loving her Naughty Girls series and can’t wait to see what happens in this one. If you’ve been following me for awhile then you know I love series that are not the typical ballroom setting and very innocent heroines. I love this series because it’s different.

Writing Update

Now a writing update! I got some time last week to write again and the words were flowing. My hero and heroine made a decision I did not see coming and I wondered if it would work, but after lots of thinking, I decided it worked perfectly for the story. Still no clue how long it will be, but I’m excited to see what happens with it.

Long Overdue Writing Update

Writing Update

I know it’s been a long time since I posted a writing update and I slapped my hand and said bad writer to myself, lol. Things got hectic around my house with different work schedules, changes, and not being able to find time to write (again I slapped my hand). Part of the problem was I got into a bit of a writer’s block with not knowing if I liked where my hero and heroine going or if I wanted to change what I had them doing. Another thing was I had a lot of blog work to do with reviews and tours so I put writing on the backburner for a bit. But I’m back to it!

Did I decide to change what I had my hero and heroine doing?

Yes, I did and I now will be rewriting a small section. Better now than later when I might have to change multiple things to work with this change. I think this will help with the writer’s block since I was fighting with the characters on what to do.

What have I learned from this?

Finding other writers to talk things over is great. I’m apart of a couple of facebook groups that are for writing but my favorite is ran by an author and mostly the historical genre. I also have learned to find someone that will let to talk about your writing without judging. For me, it is my brother who is also a book lover even though he reads a totally different genre he will listen to me. I can run different things by him and he will help me figure out what sounds better.

Anything else?

If you have followed me for awhile then you know that I pretty much only read historical romances. I realized when going through some old stuff that as a teenager I wrote some romance stories that were contemporary westerns. I got to thinking about it and I could clean them up and they would be great stories so I’m toying with the idea of working on them too. I know many authors write in different genres.

Back To The Normal Routine

I am back to my normal routine and schedule with the blog after a month of reviews. I have a lighter schedule this month with books that need to be reviewed so there will be more writing updates and other posts this month so I thought I would start off with giving some updates!

Update #1 My writing!

I didn’t win at NaNoWriMo which I wasn’t aiming for and I came very close to hitting my own goal, but holiday stuff got in the way. I have been applying myself to my writing since then and I’m getting there a couple of thousand words every time I sit down and write. My brother has become the person I bounce things off of when trying to figure something out and if it makes since. His science knowledge comes in handy with some details like how I will kill someone and if it’s possible.

I somewhat know how I’m going to end it and some of the in between, but I still have to fill in some places. My characters are still leading on where they want things to go and how they will act. My Heroine surprised me by being very bold in a scene, but in a good way.

Writing For NaNoWriMo!

Image courtesy of National Novel Writing Month.

The title says it all. I have taken the plunge and decided to participate in NaNoWriMo! I am using to hopefully get close to finishing or actually finish the book, but I’m not following strict daily word counts instead I have set an overall goal for the month.

My reason for this are:

1. I would get stuck on that number and panic.

2. My mind is faster than my typing (I am a fast typer). But because I am playing out things in my mind it takes longer to type it all out like it is in my head.

3. I can’t always write every day but when I do write I set a timer and see how much I get done in that time.

I decided to do this have taken a break from writing and so far it has been fun and a great experience so far. Doing the sprints has helped me with writing more and a bit faster and I soon will hit my first goal of 10K words typed (I will be celebrating on Instagram when it happens). Just the other night I wrote over a whole page where before I would be on the same page for days and I have NaNoWriMo to thank for that!

I even gave my story its first blurb and understand why many writers don’t like doing it. It is harder that it looks and I’m sure mine will change as I get closer to finishing. But I did think it would be fun to share it with you all since it is on my profile. I don’t that I even have shared my title with you because I’m not sure if I will be keeping it or not right now.

Blurb for The Shadow of the Gun

Clint Rockwell had only been back in town for a short time when a tragic accident that he blamed himself for sent him back into the mountains. He left his love behind and swore never to wear a gun again, but when the man that started it all comes back spreading lies he puts his gun back on to protect the girl he left behind.

Elinor Marshall was left heartbroken when the man she loved left her behind blaming himself for the accident that took her brother. she has told herself to hate him, but he still holds her heart and when he returns it awakens her heart. But the man that she blames for everything still haunts her at every turn and would do anything to have her as his. Will the return of her love save her or has he forgotten about her.

Will a shooting competition and revenge bring them back together or will their pasts keep them apart when secrets are revealed?

What I’m Currently Reading: A Kiss At Christmastide by Christina McKnight

A Kiss At ChristmastideThis week I will be reading A Kiss At Christmastide by Christina McKnight. The cover is absolutely gorgeous and I love the title. I am lucky enough to get to read this in advance and can’t wait to see what this story brings because during the Christmas season it can be magical. This will be this week’s review!

It’s my favorite time of year and its beginning to feel like fall outside! It also means more Halloween and Christmas themed books are coming out! I know I will be reading a few.

P.S My house has mostly recovered from the nasty cold everyone had including me so I am back to reading and writing!

Writing Update: Notebooks Are Your Best Friend

I have discovered that notebooks can become your best friend when it comes to writing. I always have something pop into my head when I’m not near my work or it doesn’t fit into where I am at so having a notebook is perfect for that. I’m one of those people that can wake up from a dream that is a scene for my story and I have to write it down in some form so I don’t forget it. I have a physical notebook and I use a note app on my phone for when I can’t get to my notebook right away. Something funny is that once I write it down I don’t forget it for a long time.

You’re probably thinking ” you’re writing a romance so aren’t you afraid of someone reading your notes that aren’t on your phone”. Not really because I use my notebook as a doodle book too so the front is pages of drawings and if someone did read my notes they probably wouldn’t know what they were for. They are random thoughts that have no rhyme or reason and they are usually written in my version of shorthand that makes no sense to most. Typing out my notes is actually harder for me because if I’m typing then I can erase and edit and it can mess up my thoughts where when writing I really can’t do that and I just put everything down on paper without caring how it sounds.

my main notebook doesn’t have anything on it that says top secret story notes. Any highly sensitive (aka steamy) notes that I wouldn’t want my family to read go on my phone that is locked or another notebook that is kept safe in my room.

Just an innocent notebook. Nothing to see here.

Writing Update: That Moment When You Get To That One Scene

That moment you get to that one scene that has been in your head forever and you jump up and down. I have had a scene in my head and notebook for months, but it just didn’t fit in anywhere until last week when I finally reached a point in the story where it naturally fit in and connected to other scenes. I was jumping up and down because that meant I was getting somewhere with my hero and heroine’s story. I didn’t want them stuck in one limbo for too long. This scene was important for two reasons (1) to get them on the same page with everything and (2) for them to move forward against what’s in their way, but it could make things more dangerous. I think this will help me move forward at a quicker pace somewhat. They still have a lot to say, but this was a hill to climb and I know there are a few more they have in store for me.

I also have been able to start on my playlist for this story. It took some time to find the perfect songs, but they are popping up now since I have started understanding my hero and heroine more and have gotten past this scene. And just because this is a western doesn’t mean it’s all country music that helps me imagine a scene.

Writing Update: Don’t Let Numbers Get To You

Something I realized the other day was that I shouldn’t let the number of pages and words get to me at this stage. I started to get hung up on the page number I was on and the word count which distracted me like crazy. A little voice kept telling I needed to be farther along and my word count was low and that so and so story were farther along. Then it hit me that I’m only on my first draft and nowhere near the end so those number will go up. So I told myself to ignore them until I am closer to the end because the characters have a lot to say still and to turn off the little trackers for now. It is really easy to get hung up on numbers and compare yourself to others, but every story and writer are different.

I looked back at some of my old hidden short stories and saw that every single one was different. One was a few pages, but with little action, while another was longer with a bit more action, but rushed, then I had mixes of all kinds. The point was that when I wrote those I didn’t care about numbers and just hoped I had enough paper to write on. I also apparently didn’t care about spelling back then either or wrote in some kind of code so no one else could read them lol.

Those numbers are still important in the end and I do have a goal in my head for where I would like to end, but I will not stress about it right now. When you are a slow writer like me it takes time. Now back to celebrating the 4th of July!

What I’m Currently Reading and Writing Update

I finished The Duke of Daring by Darcy Burke last night and its review will be up WA Scandalous Pursuit (Scandalous, #3)ednesday.

I am going to start on A Scandalous Pursuit by Ava Stone this week and will probably get through it in one sitting since she is a favorite author. If you read my review of The Lady Unmasked then you got a taste of how much I love her. In a couple of weeks, I will start back on the Outlander series since the show will be going on season break.

Now on to my writing update. It’s just a small update as I didn’t feel good for a few days last week. My hero and villain have finally told me why they hate each other thanks to a song I find on youtube that made it click in my head. I now fully understand my villain has done the things he has and now I just need to make it work it all out. They totally shocked me with the reason and it wasn’t even on my radar of possibilities. If you haven’t realized it yet I write by the seat of my pants pretty much and let my characters call the shots. I just think of the idea and let them lead me on the way because what’s in my head may not play out on paper when I read it after writing it.
