Sophia Ruthven is the epitome of proper behavior. On paper at least, as long as that paper isn’t from one of the lady detective stories she secretly pens. She certainly isn’t interested in associating with the dashing Jasper Grey, the wayward heir to the Earl of Stanhope, and one of the stage’s leading men. But when she learns Grey’s younger sister Liddy has gone missing, she can’t deny her desire to solve the mystery…or her attraction to the incorrigible scoundrel.

Responsibility isn’t something Grey is very familiar with. On the boards and in the bedroom, he lives exactly how he wants to, shunning all the trappings of respectability and society. Grey knows he should avoid the bewitching Sophia, but he’s never been able to say no to what he wants. And having Sophia in his arms and his bed is quickly becoming the thing he wants the most.

As Sophia and Grey’s search for Liddy continues across the English countryside, can this scoundrel convince a proper lady that he’s actually perfect for her or will their adventure leave them both heartbroken?

My Review

*I was gifted a copy from the author.

I loved the first book in this series and loved this one! I was hooked from the start and the mystery of Liddy was weaved throughout perfectly so I couldn’t guess at anything. I loved the traveling and how something always was happening. When they went to his family you realize why he has ran from his title and you love him more. Her housekeeper was a favorite of mine especially in the end when they were getting ready. The scenes with the doctor were favorites. The ending is one of my favorite endings.

Sophia is very different in the ways she thinks and acts. I loved that she used her mind and seemed all about proper behavior, but she loved adventure and mystery. Her upbringing and some other things were why she was careful and knew how to handle people.

Grey will have your heart from the start. He was defiantly a scoundrel, but he didn’t hesitate to go after his sister and would do anything to protect her. I loved how he came off wild not caring person, but he really did care and his guilt from the past will break your heart.

Set against the backdrop of London’s dangerous East End in 1888, Victorian propriety and passions collide when a beautiful widow makes a wager with a wounded police detective bent on solving the Ripper mystery.

Unlucky in love and estranged from his family, Detective Sergeant Benjamin Quinn is obsessed with solving the Ripper crimes. When he’s suspended from the Metropolitan Police, it’s another failure in a long line of disappointments. But a new mystery arises when a beautiful widow shows up at the most infamous pub in Whitechapel seeking his help. He’s determined to assist Kate Guthrie, and equally determined to quell his growing attraction to her.

Kate Guthrie hides painful secrets from her first marriage and has avoided matrimony for nearly ten years. Now she’s finally decided it’s time to remarry and move on with her life, even if it means giving up the charity clinic work in Whitechapel that makes her days worthwhile. But when a battered young woman turns up at the clinic claiming to have been attacked by Jack the Ripper, Kate seeks out Detective Sergeant Benjamin Quinn, a man who sparks feelings in her too potent to deny.

My Review

*I received a copy of the box set in exchange for my honest review.

I love the setting of this one! I never was sure what was going to happen with them because they both and things in their pasts that affected them.  I loved that they were both going to help Rose and the wager they had.  The ending was perfect and I didn’t want to put it down.

Kate survived her first marriage and didn’t believe in love anymore. Every time the guy she was thinking of marrying came around I wanted to scream no! I wanted to jump and down when she realized you could love again.

Benjamin had a passion for his job. I loved him and his sister and the how much he loved his job. I wasn’t expecting his reasons for never going home or what his boss told him. I was very happy in the end about where they were going.

A mix of some of my favorite things a heroine that is doing a man’s job, a hero that is haunted by his past and the queen! This is a bit of a love at first sight story that leaps off the pages. I loved how quickly everything happened and the twist once they got back to London. The ending was perfect.

Octavia is very much independent and out to do her job. I loved everything about her because she was serious about her job, but also very caring and bold.

Killian has hidden for different reasons than most think. I loved how took care of others and when he realized what he needed to do.

Cast in Scandal by Laura Landon

Scandal runs wild in London some known and some not. This one was great because I somewhat knew was behind everything, but there was still a small twist in it. I loved all of the scenes at the balls since there was always some kind of action good and bad. They were meant to find each other and it just took a crime to do it.

Alyssa is a very strong and innocent woman. She keeps her head high no matter what people say and is determined to take her place in society again. I loved her as soon as she walked into the ballroom and how she acted.

Edward has a very shocking secret that has kept him and his family mostly out of sight. But he is also a strong and smart man even if he comes off as cold at first. I loved how he was with his family.

This one provided some giggles and some different things and I loved that. The beginning was awesome and hooked me right away. I loved their meeting and her aunt even though she could be a little out there in what she said and did, but she cared about her niece. I thought things would happen one way, but they happened another way.

Irenna doesn’t trust many men because of something that happened, but she also has an eye for seeing the truth. I loved how she could fight if she had to and was brave in what she did.

Anthony definitely could be a peacock and make you smile. I loved him from the start and the show he put on. I also loved his fighting skills and how quick he was to react to things.

A Spy To Call My Own by Rebecca Paula

Spice Level: 💋💋💋1/2

I loved that this one is set in Africa and that the heroine is a suffragette! It was definitely a scary adventure in Africa for both while trying to uncover the answers for her brother’s death. There were a couple of sneaky twists in this one that I couldn’t figure who was behind anything or if they were even connected until the end. I also loved that they actually knew each other already.

Vera was definitely a suffragette and I loved that. When she set her mind to something to meant to do it no matter what. She didn’t seem to ever second guess herself or really jump to conclusions.

Owen knew that his friend’s death wasn’t as it seemed. He did his job and he did it very well. I loved how he just said what he was thinking when it came to everything and tried to get her back home.

Tempting the Scoundrel by Lana Williams

I loved this one from the start. As soon as they met I knew sparks were going to fly both good and bad. His grandmother was so much fun with how she had a plan and you didn’t argue with her. I loved the back and forth between them and when everything happened at the concert hall. The ending was great too.

Sophia was a determined girl. She could see there was something in him that didn’t match his reputation. I loved how she fought with herself because of what her aunt had drilled into her.

Elliott will have your heart from the start because of how he is with his grandmother. He hates to lie but has to so he can protect those around him. I loved how he was with everyone he talked to because he was kind.

Kit Ruthven’s Rules (for Rogues)

#1 Love freely but guard your heart, no matter how tempting the invader.

#2 Embrace temptation, indulge your sensual impulses, and never apologize.

#3 Scorn rules and do as you please. You are a rogue, after all.

Rules never brought anything but misery to Christopher “Kit” Ruthven. After rebelling against his controlling father and leaving the family’s etiquette empire behind, Kit has been breaking every one imaginable for the past four years. He’s enjoyed London’s sensual pleasures, but he’s failed to achieve the success he craves as London’s premier playwright. When his father dies, Kit returns to the countryside and is forced back into the life he never wanted. Worse, he must face Ophelia Marsden, the woman he left behind years before.

After losing her father, Ophelia has learned to rely on herself. To maintain the family home and support her younger sister, she tutors young girls in deportment and decorum. But her pupils would be scandalized if they knew she was also the author of a guidebook encouraging ladies to embrace their independence.

As Kit rediscovers the life, and the woman, he left behind, Ophelia must choose between the practicalities she never truly believed in, or the love she’s never been able to extinguish.

Excerpt

Pushing his sizable booted foot forward, he wedged it between the door and its frame. “I don’t think we can count this as a visit until you invite me in.”

For a moment Kit doubted Ophelia would relent. Her eyes filled with blue thunder clouds, and her lush lips seamed together, quivering at the edges. Even when she scowled at him, he wanted to kiss her. Pressing his mouth to hers had been his first instinct the minute she opened the door.

Standing on her doorstep all evening seemed extreme, but now he stood close enough to trace the starburst indigo pattern in her eyes and see heat blooming in her cheeks. He wouldn’t turn away. He’d waited too long for this moment. Just a glimpse of her and he already felt lighter.

Come in, then. But only for a moment,” she grumbled, issuing the chilliest invitation he’d had from a woman in years.

Every step he approached, Ophelia retreated, as if determined to put as much distance between them as possible.

Maybe he only felt lighter because his chest constricted the longer he looked at her, and her reticence tightened the vice. The pinching ache behind his ribs vied with the thrill of being near her, hearing her voice, reacquainting himself with the buzz of pleasure she’d always sparked in him.

This close, he couldn’t help but note how she’d changed. The girl who’d let her rebellious curls hang in corkscrews down her back and wore wildflowers in the buttonholes of her gowns had been replaced with a woman who looked every inch an eager-to-chastise governess. Her drab dress imprisoned her figure behind a row of tiny, sentry-like buttons from belly to her chin. The coarse-looking fabric made Kit’s skin itch.

Whatever caused her to hide her passionate nature away behind a guise of propriety, it didn’t work. She still smelled like jasmine, though now the appealing scent was tinged with a bit of starch. Her red hair still glowed like a fiery halo in the afternoon light. Despite her changed appearance, Kit glimpsed the girl he’d once known as well as he knew himself. The young woman he’d missed every day for years.

You’re staring,” she accused, clearly displeased with the fact. Lifting an arm stiffly, she gestured toward the room he recalled as the family’s parlor for entertaining guests. “This way. I’ll ask Mrs. Rafferty to make us some tea.”

Don’t bother Mrs. Rafferty.” He recalled the Marsdens’ housekeeper fondly, but he wanted Phee to himself. “I’ve had my fill of tea today, thank you.”

As you wish.” Pivoting with the precision of a soldier, she marched into the parlor.

Kit loathed her cool politeness, but he didn’t mind studying the tight knot of curls and the pale flesh at the back of her neck. Mercy, she held herself ramrod straight. He dropped his gaze lower, and a patch of soot on the swell of her backside caught his eye. His hand twitched as he fought the urge to touch her curves and wipe the spot away.

You have a mark on your dress.”

Where?” She stopped abruptly, and he nearly bumped into her. She turned.

He stepped back. “Just there.” He reached to grip her waist and turn her.

She skidded away from him as if he’d set her gown on fire. “I can manage on my own.”

I have no doubts on that score.”

My Review

Who doesn’t love a heroine that writes a guidebook that encourages young ladies to be independent? I loved that this one talked about the city a bit more with the trains and publishers instead of balls and parties. It was a bit slow in the beginning, but once everything started happening then I got into it more. I loved how they were with their families and each other. At one time I was almost screaming thinking she was going to change her mind.

Ophelia is a different heroine. She loves her lists and to have order in her life. I loved her from the start and how much she cared about her sister. I felt for her because she didn’t have fun anymore.

Kit is someone that you are instantly drawn to. He is a playwright and a bit of a rogue. I loved that he kept trying to keep away from the publishing world because of his father, but he kept being pulled into it.

An infamous rogue meets his match in a feisty chaperone who has all but given up on love.

Felicity Beckett’s uncle has tasked her with one goal for Lord and Lady Forsythe’s country house party. Keep her innocent cousin away from the notorious rake, Lord Lindsay. The man’s Rogue’s Rulebook has earned him the most scandalous of reputations, but no one warned Felicity how irresistible a rogue can be.

Alex Evering, Lord Lindsay, agrees to attend his aunt and uncle’s party for a bit of enjoyment before embracing the duties of his newly inherited title, but he loathes their scheme to redeem his reputation and marry him off to a proper young lady–until he meets Miss Beckett.

My Review

This story will suck you in and will have you wanting more. I will be going crazy waiting for this series. It’s a quick read, but not too quick so you get a feel for everything without feeling rushed. I loved the whole I’m just a chaperone and you shouldn’t even notice me thing.

I really liked Felicity because when she set out to do something she tried her best. I loved the scene with her and the book.

Alex is a man that was thrown into a pit of girls that his aunt wanted him to pick from to marry. He doesn’t let his new title dictate who he is and how he will do things. He also doesn’t bat an eye at
Felicity’s past and has a perfect line for it.

When I got the end I wanted more badly because I wanted to get to know them more and find out about the Rogues’ Rulebook and Alex’s family.
