An Agent for Alexina by Laura Beers

Alexina Kimball is an experienced Pinkerton Agent, and arguably one of the best agents at the Chicago office. She works alone and always catches the bad guys. However, everything changes when she’s transferred to the Denver office and is assigned a partner.

Finally, Dawson Wayne’s dream of becoming a Pinkerton Agent is becoming a reality. The only catch is that he must marry his trainer… a beautiful, infuriating woman.

Together, they’re sent to the small town of Hidden Ditch, Kansas. Their case: discover the whereabouts of two schoolteachers who’ve gone missing. As the stakes increase, can Alexina and Dawson work together to solve the case, or are they both too stubborn to recognize that there is more on the line than just the missing schoolteachers?

Can two headstrong agents learn to trust each other’s instincts when love is on the line?

I love this series because you get a romance and a crime to solve along with female agents. This one may just be my favorite because they are both so headstrong and drive each other crazy. It’s clear pretty fast that they are meant for each other. I figured out who was behind the kidnappings but wasn’t expecting how crazy they were. I loved everything about the rescue and how it brought them together even when it caused a slight misunderstanding.

Alexina keeps to herself and prefers to work alone, but Dawson easily flips her world upside down. I loved her from the start with stubborn she was. She had no problem telling men what she thought about them and is always serious.

Dawson is adorably cocky and annoying, but that’s what makes you love him so much. He has such a different back story than Alexina, but he is fascinated by the woman she is. I was holding my breath because of him during the fried apple scene. He will make you laugh with some of the things he does.

The Monster of Montvale Hall by Nadine Millard

A childhood tragedy had shaped the life of Robert Forsythe, the Duke of Montvale Hall, forever.

He kept himself isolated from the world and the people in it, reveling in his reputation as a monster.

Locked in a world of guilt and grief, nobody had ever been able to break down the walls he kept around him. Nobody had ever tried.

And if being a monster kept everyone away, then a monster he would be.

Abigail Langton was as headstrong as she was mischievous, so it was no surprise that she wasn’t exactly welcomed at Montvale Hall with open arms.

It didn’t take her long to understand why its owner was called a monster.

It took even less time to realize that monster or not, Abigail’s heart called to him in a way she couldn’t deny or understand.

Robert’s world is turned upside down and inside out by the irrepressible Abigail. And try as he might to avoid it, he finds himself drawn to her in ways he doesn’t want. In ways that scare the wits out of him.

Will Robert give in to the temptation that is Abigail? And will Abigail find the heart of the man beneath the monster?

Abigail’s surprise arrival was just what Montvale Hall needed and she will flip everything upside down. These two are not a love at first sight couple, but they are drawn to each other no matter how much they try to fight it. The attraction between them is strong and everyone sees it, but until the past is brought forward they will battle at every turn.

The final battle breaks down the rest of the wall he has created by making him face the past once and for all. I loved Robert’s mother when she had a talk with him because she didn’t mince words. Abigail’s cousin knew she was exactly what his best friend needed.

Abigail won’t let him hide behind the monster he has created and is determined to find the man she knows that is hiding inside. I loved her right away with how she spoke her mind went toe to toe with Robert. She knew what she wanted and was going to get it.

Robert is a broken man behind the monster he created and it is slowly eating away at his life. You can tell from the start that he really has a big heart and the longer he’s around her the more the real him comes out. I loved when he finally realized he couldn’t give her up.

A TWIST OF FATE…

Miss Katherina Elliott leads a simple life, teaching impoverished children, just as her parents did before her. Kate knows little of her family’s past: only that every three months, a mysterious benefactor sends her enough money to pay the school’s mounting bills. The envelope is brought by the solicitor across the street–a man Kate knows she shouldn’t want but can’t resist.

Lord Joshua Stuart, the second son of the Duke of Beaufort, has never fit in with the rest of his family. Though he has a practice on Bond Street, he’s always preferred working in Cheapside, where he can make a real difference. It has nothing to do with his attractive, sweet neighbor across the street, or so he tells himself. But when Kate’s school is threatened, Joshua knows he must help her.

As Joshua and Kate work to save the school, they grow closer, until their love for each other can no longer be denied. Their search brings them to the famed fortune teller, Madame Zeta, who holds the key to Kate’s past. But when Kate’s fate intertwines with Madame Zeta’s, nothing will ever be the same. Will her love for Joshua survive fortune’s twists, or will they end up as the final folly?

Fate brought these two together at just the right time. The mystery of who is sending the money brings them closer and leads them answers they didn’t expect. You’ll never see who is behind the threat to the school coming or any of the surprises that pop up. Their love is a strong one that can withstand anything thrown at them.

Kate just wants to teach the local children and be happy, but fate has other ideas. I loved her from the start because she didn’t back down from anything. She didn’t run when she realized her feelings.

Joshua lives to help people and helping Kate is at the top of his list. I loved the work he did and how he treated everyone like family and friends. He wasn’t going to let her do anything alone.

The year is 1780 and the Devil’s Isles, a group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, have recently been conquered by Britain after a brief war. The inhabitants of the Devil’s Isles practice magic and both human and animal sacrifice. Nebula, a young princess from the islands, struggles with this and is beginning to question what she has been taught.

Aware of a plot to kill everyone on the islands, Nebula defects to the British side where she takes on a new identity and a new life. Under the name Adeliza, she works in England as a maid for a Dr Moon. Only two men know her real identity; the kind-hearted doctor and the seemingly terrifying Mr Lastman.

This kind of historical fiction is new to me and while not my cup of tea there were parts I really enjoyed. You get to follow the journey of Adeliza over the course of a few years as she grows from a young girl to a young woman. She is very much like every teenage girl when it comes to her heart and I enjoyed seeing her go through real struggles of a teenager.

There really isn’t much romance except for her brief love for one guy. I kinda think this would be a good story for a teenager because they could relate a bit more to Adeliza and her struggles. Love scenes aren’t graphic and there are only a couple so it’s fine for a teenager.

The author has a great imagination and did a great job with creating this story.

What’s a future duke to do when the most unsuitable woman possible captures his heart?

Eden had tried to avoid even a hint of scandal her whole life.
Plowing headlong into the Marquis of Sterling and dropping eggs on his boots wasn’t the most foolish thing Eden Haverden had ever done. Imprudently agreeing to take the charming rogue home when his horse went lame wasn’t either. But reluctantly accepting Chester’s invitation to stay the night at his familial estate after she nearly drowned? Yes, that assuredly was a rash decision and invited utter ruin. So why doesn’t she listen to her common sense?

The DeCourcy sins have haunted Chester his entire life.
Determined to create a new legacy for the tainted duchy, Manchester’s every action and decision are governed by diligence and discipline. A man of reason and purpose, he should not be distracted by the wholly unsuitable Eden Haverden. Not only is she the illegitimate offspring of his father’s arch enemy, she’s also the sister of the man who’d killed his brother. Why then, can’t he resist the powerful connection between them?

Can Chester convince Eden to put aside their families’ feud and trust him with her heart and love?

I absolutely love the magic of this one! Fate brought them together and nothing was going to keep them apart. The moment they met their common sense and ways of doing things went out the window. They definitely had obstacles to get past, but none were like his father.

I got giddy when they were told the meaning behind the rose. Then I was holding my breath with his father’s last attempt, but loved that scene and how it played out. I was just beginning to think he had changed when that happened. At least I wasn’t wrong about her brother in the end even though that scene had me on the edge of my seat. The proposal was one of the best I’ve read.

Eden is very different from any of the women Chester could meet. She has a fun collection of pets and stands her ground against anyone. I loved her right away because she didn’t hold back her thoughts about anything.

Chester is also very different from the men Eden is used to. He doesn’t bat an eye at her birth and will do anything for her and her mother. He loved to be one step ahead of his father and jumped at the chance put him in his place.

I loved in the end how everything worked out for everyone.

When the Wicked Duke dares the Duke of Colehaven to find a suitor for an unmanageable ward, Cole immediately accepts. He’s on a winning streak, and besides, how unmarriageable can a pretty young lady be? He appoints himself bodyguard and duenna, only to discover his own desires may be the greatest danger of all.

Supposed wallflower Diana Middleton lives a double life, bringing dishonest businessmen to justice. Shaking off a meddling duke should be child’s play. Yet the more they lock horns, the more she wants to lock lips. Her scandalous secrets would derail his political career. But surely there’s no harm in one little seduction…

Meet the unforgettable men of London’s most notorious tavern, The Wicked Duke. Seductively handsome, with charm and wit to spare, one night with these rakes and rogues will never be enough…

The roles in seduction are reversed when it comes to Diana and Cole. You know it’s going to be interesting when the butler get unnerved by someone calling on her. They butt heads from the start, but they are so much alike. I loved their battles because I never knew what would happen next. Everyone around them seemed to know what was going to happen.

Diana is a spitfire that goes to great lengths to hide from people. She is extremely bold in everything she does and doesn’t shy away from anything. She just needed to see it wasn’t her battle to fight alone.

Cole wasn’t prepared for the battles when it came to Diana. I loved his story about his life and how he went about things with her. He didn’t hesitate once he knew his feelings.

He was too dangerous to be denied…

The Duke of Longley was a rake and should be left well enough alone. At least that is what Lady Lily Ducat’s mother continually said. As far as Lily could tell, she was correct. His Grace had a devilish air about him and a brooding silence that no debutante should attempt to tame and certainly not grow an affection for. He was too much man and beyond redemption. Except once they are tossed together after a winter storm, she is dangerously close to declaring her love, because in the dark of night, he was all Lily could see.

Maximillian Masters learned long ago to stay far away from dewy eyed maidens. He was too cynical, too experienced, and much too adverse to marriage for such a lady. Which is why he must never see the lovely Lily again, no matter what some ridiculous gypsy predicted. Except, when he is stranded and at the mercy of winter, Lily is there, and the more he sees her, the harder it is to deny temptation.

This is one of the most thrilling ones I’ve read! Definitely read the free prologue How to Reform a Rake first because it really gives that extra boost. No matter what they did fate was going to put them together. He didn’t believe any of it until that door opened. It was a powerful love at first sight with him tossing aside everything to help her if needed. It has one of the best wedding scenes and a great ending.

Lily would do anything to help her sister, even say no to the man she loved. Her mother blamed her for everything and almost destroyed her. I loved how she stood up for herself and listened to her sisters.

Max completely changed as soon as he was around her. I loved how he listened to her sisters and knew what he would do. He was like a puppy when it came to her in front of all those people.

I can’t wait to read her sister’s stories, especially Adelaide because she is really going to be fun.

It’s all hands on deck between a Welsh smuggler and his enemy Spanish lady-fair!

As fierce and deadly as a sword, Saban “the Sabre” Rees runs his family smuggling business with a strong hand and an unmatched loyalty. He is determined to turn the name Rees into a legacy that will endure for generations.

But he had not planned on her.

Esperanza “Essa” Fernandez is the loyal sister to a pirate lord. Determined to show her brother she can be an asset to the Demonios de Mar, she disguises herself and joins a raid. But instead of proving herself, she is captured by the most devilishly handsome man she’s ever met.

Trapped and unarmed—but never helpless, Essa cannot allow herself to fall under the devil’s spell. But the more time she spends with him, the more she wonders if she is fighting for the wrong side.

Saban cannot believe that the creature he captured is a stunning woman, one he cannot seem to exorcise from his blood. But exorcise her he must, because once he realizes she is the sister to one of his most hateful enemies, he must decide what he wants more…Esperanza or revenge.

These two defiantly take you on an adventure from the start. I was holding my breath from the time they met and the whole time in the cottage. I never knew what was going to happen between these two. Rosamund has a talent for throwing in a twist just when you think you know how things are going to happen. You don’t see it coming, but it is always awesome.

I have to say the ending between her brother and her was the best ever!

Essa is a strong and stubborn women. I loved her from the start with how she planned to escape. She needed to see the truth with her own eyes to know which side was right.

Saban rules with a strong hand, but has a big heart. I loved that he listened to his heart and was ready to protect her. He can scare you at times, but you come to love him.

The cover on this ones matches what I picture him as really well.

One forbidden kiss sets them on a path from which there’s no return.

In a desperate final attempt to force her cruel betrothed to call off their arranged marriage, Arieen Fleming deliberately creates a public scandal. Aware she’ll likely be shunned by Society and remain unmarried, she kisses a dashing swashbuckler at a masked ball. What she doesn’t anticipate is her powerful fascination and sensual reaction to Coburn Wallace. And she most certainly doesn’t foresee her father casting her out as a result of her madcap scheme.

Coburn Wallace is a man who enjoys life and women to the fullest. As cousin and second-in-command to a laird, he has no need or desire to marry and produce an heir. When a beautiful female pirate demands he kiss her, who is he to refuse such an unexpected gift? Upon learning Arieen’s been disowned and is destitute, he’s seized with an inexplicable urge to protect her even as his honor demands he marry Arieen for his unwitting contribution to her ruination.

Arieen has no choice but to accept Coburn’s offer, and though they can’t deny their overwhelming, mutual attraction, dare they hope for more? Can attraction blossom into love in a marriage neither wanted?

For an enthralling, emotional Scottish Highland adventure you won’t want to put down, read this second book in the Heart of a Scot Series.

Though this book is part of a series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone novel.

My Review

Desperate times call for desperate measures and they might just redeem a rake. I was hooked from the moment her plan was revealed and her back up plan. That spark between them ignited from across the room and they were goners as soon as they kissed. I was completely shocked by every word that came out of her father’s mouth when he saw them. When Coburn showed her where he came from and told her he couldn’t let her be homeless made my heart melt. The way they got married is one of my favorite scenes and I rarely see that way of doing it. A tiny part of me wished someone would really knock her father down a few more pegs, but I loved how it all ended.

Arieen will not stand by and let her father trade her like property to a man that didn’t care about her at all. She is not shy at all and has no problems saying what she heard or thinks. I loved how she kept her head up after everything her father said and with the gossip going.

Coburn may love women to the fullest, but he has a heart of gold and won’t let her suffer. He knew he wanted her and would do anything to protect her. I loved how he was just as blunt as her and that he went to great lengths to make her happy.

Hearts break. Armor tarnishes. Honor remains.
Brokken, Texas, 1867

Abigail Bailey isn’t sure her idea was wise. She’s not even sure she can love another man after her beloved Sam perished in a Union run prisoner of war camp. But her town needs a doctor, and she has decided to accept any man competent to do the job. Yet doubt plagues her. What will he think when he finds she is uneducated, so much so that she did not pen her own letters to him?

The Civil War broke Dr. Mathew Knight. His decisions of who to save, who to allow to die, even what to use, haunts his every step. He can never be unbroken, but he wants a chance for his son. Four-year-old Ethan has been left terrorized after witnessing atrocities no one should have to see. Mathew’s child needs a mother. He hopes Abigail Bailey may fill that role, an omission he made in his letters. Perhaps, too, he’ll have a chance to start over, maybe even to find a reason to practice medicine again.

Two broken people in a broken town might be what they each need to become whole again.

My Review

Knights in shining armor aren’t always men and sometimes there is more than one. These two needed each other more than they realized and weathered the storm together. I was hooked from the moment he bought the ticket because I knew he was going to need someone to pull him up. They had an instant connection that got stronger as time went on and helped them in many ways. Ethan needed them both to help him after what he had seen and the three of them together was the strongest. There are amazing scenes and I can’t wait to read more about the town of Brokken.

Abigail loved her husband and she loves this town. She is as stubborn as they come and will battle anyone that tries to tell her what to do. I loved her right away because she didn’t bat an eye at helping Ethan and seemed to know exactly what he needed.

Mathew is very much haunted by the war and what happened with his son. He didn’t come away without scars mentally and physically, but he would do anything to help his son. I loved how open he was with her and didn’t bat an eye at her past or anything she said.

Lynda did a great job writing a sweet romance without losing the spark between.
