Scandal proves deadly in this dark, emotional Gothic Regency Romance

Lady Jemma Forster knows all too well how ruthless gossip-mongers can be. She sacrificed her own happiness to restore her family’s reputation. Her marriage of convenience to an affluent earl meant saying goodbye to passion, and any chance at love with the dashing lawman who set her soul aflame. She leads a sedate, practical life as the Countess of Wolverston. Until her husband is murdered, and the only man who can bring his killers to justice is her former love.

Bow Street Runner Gabriel Sinclair has spent the last three years trying to forget about smart, beautiful Lady Jemma, who broke his heart when she married his best friend. The Earl of Wolverston’s death thrusts Gabriel and Jemma back together, as they work to find his murderer. Their investigation takes them into the darkest, most dangerous parts of London, with threats coming from all sides. They’re perfect partners for solving crimes, but can they be partners in love too?

Previously released in It Started With a Whisper

My Review

As with all of Erica’s books, I’m hooked right away and there’s always a twist to surprise me. I loved the whole story surrounding their past and her husband sounded like a good guy. I was shocked by who the killer was, the reason for it and what he did afterwards. The note she found was definitely a scary surprise, but also sweet in a way. I loved seeing Claire and Felicity again and how they were involved with things. The scene with her and the woman that had information was a favorite along with the scene about the grave.

Jemma knew who to call for help with not just the murder, but her heart too. I loved her and how she couldn’t really lie and didn’t really care what others thought. She did really care about her husband and had a special relationship with him. I didn’t expect her to be a good fighter to when in trouble.

Gabriel has always loved her and it was no secret to most people. I loved that he understood her and her reasons for marrying her husband. He is one of those people that you want to be friends with no matter what.

I also love Lady X’s little scandals she wrote because it added to it.

Esmie Elstone is thrown into panic when she hears of Captain Rockford’s return. But she is determined that the days of him interfering with her life are over. Destroying her chances of a happy future on his last visit, had resulted in her being foisted on her Aunt for a third pointless season in London.

To alleviate the boredom of society life, Esmie helps run a discreet betting enterprise under the guise of a sewing club. But there are some things you just shouldn’t wager on, and Esmie’s integrity is soon put to a dangerous test.

Richard Rockford had known Esmie almost all her life. As neighbours, her father, Admiral Elstone, had depended on Richard to keep an eye on his daughter when he was away at sea – a responsibility he had always taken on willingly. But her cruel and thoughtless actions, from the day he had left four years earlier, had shaken him. Now, he was back, and he wanted answers.

But when Esmie tumbles into a treacherous conspiracy, can he really turn his back on her?

My Review

This was my first book by Susan Lodge and I couldn’t put it down and was hooked from page one! Were they going to kill each other or kiss? I never knew what was going to happen between them. I knew her past was going to come back and cause more trouble but didn’t expect the amount of trouble. It was clear to everyone that they were perfect for each other because they balanced each other out. I was holding my breath when she was being questioned and then when it came to what they planned. The proposal and ending were perfect and I didn’t see the twist with her friend coming.

Esmie was definitely on the wild side even when she didn’t mean to be. She lived with such guilt for so long that it was heartbreaking. I loved her right away because she didn’t mean to always cause trouble and she knew how to take care of herself. Once her eyes were fully open to everything she was free.

Richard was always looking out for her no matter what and he didn’t realize fully why. I loved him because he really cared even though he wanted to make her suffer at first. Nothing would stop him from keeping her safe and I wouldn’t dare try to stop him.

“Sisters-in-law to marquises and wards of earls do not marry uneducated bastards with empty coffers.”

In this fourth installment of USA Today bestselling author Collette Cameron’s Conundrums of the Misses Culpepper series, a roguish sea captain battles his attraction to a gently-bred hellion.

Captain Oliver Whitehouse has two goals:

1. Make the final payment on his ship
2. Exact revenge for his grandfather’s murder

He certainly shouldn’t interrupt years of planning to rescue a damsel in distress and see her safely to England. Nor should he foolishly entertain romantic notions about a future with the impulsive beauty. Even if she is the loveliest creature he’s ever laid eyes on, and only she makes him forget his past.

Blaike Culpepper once craved adventure and excitement. Until her impetuousness nearly caused her ruin. Now shadowed by scandal, and pursued by a madman, she finds herself obligated to the darkly handsome Oliver Whitehouse. Though she saves the swashbuckling scoundrel’s life and enjoys a forbidden kiss, the infuriating man spurns her.

Dare Oliver risk everything to pursue Blaike, despite the vast difference in their social stations, or should he sail away? Leaving his heart behind?

Caution: This novel contains a dark-tempered, devilishly handsome sea captain, and impulsive, sometimes mischievous heroine, multiple villains you’ll love to loathe, and a foul-mouthed cockatoo sure to make you giggle. Or blush.

For an adventurous page-turning Regency Historical Romance novel brimming with suspense, passion, and tenderness, read the fourth installment of the Conundrums of the Misses Culpepper.

My Review

You will be hooked from the start with this one! I was holding my breath as soon as I realized what was happening in the office. I loved how they were together from the start because they couldn’t hide anything from each other. M’Lady Lottie adds to everything with how she interrupts and the things she says. I did not expect the reason for why his grandfather was murdered or everything surrounding it.

Blaike is one of a kind in many ways. I loved her right away because she wouldn’t go down without a fight for anything. She knew what she wanted and went after it. When she did what she did in front of everyone I couldn’t keep from laughing.

Oliver believes they can never be but is very wrong. I loved him from that start because of how open he was with her and the way he treated everyone including Lottie. He had no clue what secrets were buried about his family.

I loved that it also involved some Italian.

Be careful what you wish for…

When Lord Hawkridge inherits a penniless marquessate, he must abandon his courtship of the lowborn girl he loves. Years later, she rises from commoner to textiles heiress. Hawk has never banished her from his heart. Here’s their chance to share his home! But how can he convince a woman whose trust he destroyed that he desires her far more than her money?

Faith Digby’s chaotic world is too full to bother with men. She controls half a boarding school, one life-endangering secret, and two recently gentrified parents. There’s no time for the old flame roaring back into her life. Not when admitting she still loves him would imperil everything and everyone she holds dear…

My Review

This one has it all! A secret love, heartbreak, and more secrets. I couldn’t put it down because there was something at every turn to pull me in more. Their past story is heartbreaking and he wanted to make things right so much. I loved how no matter how hard she tried her heart reacted to him and wanted to believe him. I did not see her secret coming at all and held my breath when he found out. What he decided was not what I thought was going to happen, but I loved it.

Faith made it clear she never wanted to see him again, but fate brought him back. I loved her and the work she did at the school. She can break your heart when talking about the past. I loved when she realized he needed to forgive himself.

Hawk’s whole life has been a mess and he’s vowed to never be like his father or guardian. My heart melted at how much he was trying to restore things and how much he hated what he had done. He reacted but thought things through when it came to her secret.

I loved her parents throughout the story and his brother and mother.

Freed from the clutches of her cruel, traitorous mother and impostor husband, Lady Camden wants to rebuild her fractured life. But the years of terror and pain she endured at their hands continue to grip her heart in an iron vice. Refusing to stray from the refuge of her country estate, Kate tentatively agrees to an unusual alliance with the new Lord Camden, being mindful to keep her trust, and her heart, firmly safeguarded.

Adrien, the Earl of Camden, had lost everything he held dear while working undercover in France as an agent of the Crown, known only as Hawk. Now an earl, he wants only to repair his tattered, lonely life. His efforts are interrupted, however, when he is called to accept another assignment: Stop French spies from passing a bill in Parliament that will eliminate British aid in the war against Napoleon.

When Kate’s past pulls her into a web of treachery and deceit, a life she is wholly unprepared for, Adrien must use any means necessary to stop the French spies from succeeding in their evil designs and keep her safe. When the truth is finally revealed, will Lady Camden be strong enough to seize her own future and happiness, or will her heart be too shattered to ever love a spy?

My Review

As always Laura will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat as you are thrown into yet another thrilling spy adventure! This one continues not long after the ending of the last one and brings everyone together again. Its not only the journey of catching the spies but of learning to love and trust again. I was hooked from the start because it was clear that he loved her and wanted to help her in every way. In no way did I see who was behind everything or the crazy reasons for some of it coming. The wedding scene tops all others I have loved with its own little twists. Serious book hangover with this one and hope there is more to the series soon.

Kate is stronger than she realizes and needs help to find her voice again. Her emotions and trauma of what happened rule her at times, but she is a favorite of mine. She didn’t wither away and everyone around her wanted to help her. I loved when she started acting like a spy without fulling realizing it.

Adrien wears his heart on his sleeve without knowing it. I loved how thought about things and his use of a sledgehammer made him a favorite. He could so easily transform and convince people of anything that you almost believe it yourself. When did what he did before the wedding I loved him more.

This is a must read series!

About the Book:

Death is just the beginning in this dark, emotional Gothic Regency Romance…

After the death of her beloved guardian, Miss Felicity Fields is left adrift, her future uncertain. Grief-stricken, she launches a plan to use the ancient art of alchemy to bring back to life the woman who was like a mother to her. The last thing this blunt bluestocking needs is the return of Nicholas Harding, the Duke of Wycliffe and rightful owner of her home on the wild coast of Cornwall. He stirs an unexpected passion within her, and Felicity has had enough change in her life.
When they were children, Nicholas never understood his aunt’s brilliant but unemotional ward, or her many strange scientific studies. He ought to take her back to London, so she can make a proper society match–except he can’t stop thinking about her. But with the line between life and death blurred by Felicity’s experiments, can he convince her that she’s no longer alone, and her proper place is by his side?

This one will pull at your heart and give you goosebumps at times. I loved the spark that was between them and when it exploded it was like years built up. There’s a bit of Frankenstein vibes with her wanting to bring her back and the reason pulls at your heart. They were meant to be together and experiments brought them together.

Felicity is so different from any other heroine and I love her. She will break your heart with her reason for trying to bring her back and how long she has been trying to. It wasn’t that she needed to change who she was, but learn to understand and be around people.

Nicholas wanted to do what he thought was right for. I loved that he didn’t want to control her and wanted to help her. He was what she needed to help her deal with everything.

I previously reviewed this book in the Christmas in Castle Keyvnor series

Excerpt:

How dare he!

For a minute, Felicity stood there, glaring daggers at Nicholas’s retreating back. How dare he, she

thought again, and again, as she had so many times before when dealing with him. He made her want to

shake her fist, stomp her foot, and spit on him. Perhaps she’d do all three, with him here now.

Which no one had told her to anticipate.

If she’d had time to prepare, she could have had a strategy. Now she was caught at a disadvantage.

Why hadn’t anyone informed her? After so many years living at Tetbery, the servants knew she didn’t cope

well with the unexpected.

And now, she had too much at stake—if Nicholas learned about the true nature of her experiments,

he’d stop her from bringing back Margaret.

Gathering her skirts in one hand, Felicity broke into a jog. The wind smacked against her cheeks, the

harshness somehow fitting. The morning had started out sunny, but despite the clearness of the sky, the sun

simply wasn’t strong enough to abate the chill.

All the sun did was make Nicholas look like golden god.

Fitting, too, that even the weather was against her.

“Curb her wild ways,” he’d said, as if he was the one to do that.

When they’d been children, she’d always been the one to point out possible dangers. He’d never

listened. Not when she’d given him directions in her laboratory, and not when he’d sprained his ankle jumping

off the manor’s second story balcony to get away from her lecture on the pollination processes of honey bees.

Served him right, really. Honey bees were fascinating creatures, and he should have been thanking her

for enlightening him, not running away.

The lady meets her match – and he’s hopelessly ineligible.

Poverty stricken marquis, Lord Tamar, is regarded in Blackhaven as an amiable eccentric and a gifted painter, rather than as a wicked man. But Tamar has secrets that he dare not reveal to anyone, let alone to the delightful Lady Serena, the Earl of Braithwaite’s sister, who suddenly lights up his world.

To Serena, fed up with London etiquette and sent home to her family castle in disgrace after her engagement is broken, the fascinating Tamar is a breath of fresh air. Accepting his help with the mystery of the strange barrels in the castle cellar, she is soon in the midst of danger involving smugglers and spies and a friend’s broken heart.

But it is her own heart which is in most danger, as she falls swiftly and desperately in love. And neither her family nor Tamar himself would ever countenance a marriage between them. Moreover, the marquis turns out to have committed a far more shocking crime than mere poverty.

My Review

I was hooked from the moment they met because it was clear it was going to be different. I loved the adventure of the smuggling that kept throwing them together. I did not see the twist of what was being hidden in the castle or who was behind the smuggling coming at all. They were perfect for each other and nothing was going to keep them apart even when they tried to stay apart. I had no clue what his secret was going to be and was shocked but loved how it was handled.

Serena is loveable from the start because she doesn’t hide from anything. I loved her with her sisters and how she said what had to be said. She couldn’t be cold no matter what she tried and believed.

Tamar always says what he thinks and doesn’t hide anything about his family. I loved his right away and his paintings sounded amazing. He tried to push her away but was drawn back to her every time.

Forming a reckless alliance with the actor, John Wilkes Booth, she is drawn deeper into the plot to assassinate the President of the United States. A Confederate spy in love with a Union officer, her next decision will determine whether she lives or dies…

My Review

Real history, romance, and revenge make this an amazing story! I love that this story didn’t just cover a little bit of time in the civil war, it covered the whole war. I was hooked from the start when she broke that boys nose and how she became a lady. I loved the instant connection between them that was a fire that no one could put out. The bird spies all had their reasons for why they wanted to help the south win. I was holding my breath during her missions and every time something happened. I loved Hecubah and her story because I wouldn’t want to mess with her. When I got the end I didn’t want it to end.

Ceci is bent on revenge and torn between both sides. I loved her because she reacted like anyone else would, but she didn’t completely see red. It was a journey for her to get back to the man she loved and the person she really was. I held my breath when she met up with Booth.

Trent always loved her and everything about her. I loved the way he reacted to anything she did. I held my breath anytime he was near a battle. He was the perfect person for her.

I loved all the real historical figures and facts.

My Review

This one is full of twists and turns. I loved that is started with what happened to him as a child and that surrounded what was happening. The mystery was very shocking because even though I figured out who it was I didn’t see the reason for why coming. A lot happens in this story that can make you laugh and have you on the edge of your seat. I loved the instant connection and how different their story was. Both sets of parents are different and fun.

Laura is very different and stubborn and I loved that about her. She just made some crazy decisions that I wanted to shake her for. I did love how strong she was when in a horrible situation.

Rem is used to charming women in an instant and lost with her. I loved how he kept trying and messing up at times. He does know how to treat her and others around him. I held my breath with him near the end.

This one does get a bit graphic with details involving the mystery and that could bother some people.

To heal her heart, Aloria’s aim is to simply survive her final grand ball before her twenty-fourth birthday, and hope that her parents finally come to terms with her spinsterhood and allow her to retire to the country in peace.

Unfortunately, Marcus Adair, the Duke of Wolfeton, has other plans for her future. In town to secure a bride, he has set his sights on Aloria, and no other woman will do. But after a chance meeting in a darkened hallway, Marcus realizes he not only needs Aloria in his life; he desires her above all others.

Can Lady Aloria forget her scandalous past to build a future with the Duke of Wolfeton?

My Review

I loved this one and couldn’t put it down. Sparks were flying with their first meeting and I was cheering him on throughout the story. Her parents are very different from most and truly want to see her safe and happy after everything that has happened. I loved that the person trying to put them together was not someone you would expect. Things worked out perfectly in the end.

Aloria is one of those heroines that many can connect with on many levels. She has put up with so much throughout her life for so many different people. I loved that she slowly came out of her shell and safe place to find happiness.

Marcus is someone that you will love instantly. He came for one reason, but quickly changed his mind and wanted to prove himself. I loved that he was ready to battle anyone that put her down and that he found his way.
